Greens on Screen started its life in 1999 before many of the football sites that we are familiar with today, including Plymouth Argyle's own official site. Greens on Screen is dedicated to the sights, sounds and history of Plymouth Argyle Football club. It is owned and run by the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive, a charity dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and display of the heritage of our great football club.

The site owes its existence to Steve Dean.Without Steve's dedication and commitment for over 25 years, GoS would not exist and be the valued and loved resource for all football fans that it is today. The site is truly the envy of many clubs, and we owe a huge debt to Steve for his tireless work, and continued support behind the scenes.

Greens on Screen's first page was published in January 1999. Its early purpose was to bring Plymouth Argyle a little closer to those unable to see their team, and whilst it has changed a great deal over the years, its core themes - sights and sounds for Westcountry exiles - still stand. The site was very lucky to take on the content of Trevor Scallan's Semper Viridis in the summer of 2007, and in 2009 launched GoS-DB, a wealth of facts and figures from PAFC's history. A year later, we embarked on a complete history of Argyle, with much-valued contributions from chapter authors. Greens on Screen was taken over by its new custodians, The Argyle Archive, in 2024.

Greens on Screen is an amateur website and proud of it. It is run by a team of volunteers from the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive (Argyle Archive). Without the hard work and much-valued contributions of these volunteers, running the site would not be possible. Greens on Screen is self-taught and as a result, a little bit quirky.

Greens on Screen remains advertisement free, which means we are grateful for the generous support of our donors and the work of our volunteers to help keep it free of promotions. If you would like to support the work of Greens on Screen, please consider donating to the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive.

GoS's sole aim is to be a service to fellow supporters, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate Argyle's history for many years to come.

Also included on the three most recent days, facts from Argyle's history.

Tuesday 30th July 2024

Argyle suffered their first defeat of the pre-season campaign, losing by the odd goal in three at Bristol Rovers. The Gas led by two goals at the break, scoring through Promise Omochere and Jack Hunt, although Argyle had numerous efforts, mostly prevented by on-song Rovers goalkeeper Josh Griffiths.

In a second period that took a while to crank up, Ryan Hardie got the Greens back in it with time ticking away, but despite their best efforts, Argyle could not find an equaliser.

The game was notable for two debuts and a farewell. The new away kit saw its first outing and there was a first start for recent signing, Icelandic defender, Victor Palsson. It would also turn out to be the last game that Dan Scarr would play in Argyle colours.

Argyle line up: Michael Cooper, Nathanael Ogbeta, Jordan Houghton (capt) (32 Will Jenkins Davies, 80), Dan Scarr (Lewis Gibson, 60), Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker, Mustapha Bundu (Ryan Hardie, 60), Brendan Galloway (Matty Sorinola, 78), Muhammed Tijani (Callum Wright, 60), Adam Forshaw (Bali Mumba, half-time), Victor Palsson (Julio Pleguezuelo, 60).

Argyle have launched the new away kit for the coming season.

The all-white kit celebrates the Club's heritage, with numerous iconic Mayflower logos throughout the shirt which is trimmed with black cuffs and V-neck collar. The Argyle crest and the logo of front-of-shirt sponsors Classic Builders have been adapted to fit the colour scheme. The shorts and socks are also all-white.

The kit will be worn for the first time at the friendly against Bristol Rovers this evening.

Argyle Women have been drawn away to Bridgwater United in the FA Women's National League Cup determining round.

The tie is scheduled to take place during the week beginning 26 August, following our opening home fixture of the season against Oxford United at Home Park. Details of date and kick-off time will be announced in due course.

28th

Happy birthday to Freddie Issaka who is 18 today.

Argyle Women continued their exciting run of pre-season form by beating Aberystwyth Town 12-0 at a sunny Manadon.

The Greens opened the scoring immediately after kick-off and continued an attacking run until the whistle blew for full-time. A brace from Emily Elliott; a hat-trick by a tribalist and goals from Ellie Sara and new signing Ella Stephens pushed Argyle's advantage to seven at the half. After the break, there was no slowing down, with Sara scoring a 22-minute second-half hat-trick and Charlotte Whitmore adding two of her own.

Head Coach Ryan Perks said: "I'm delighted with the girls' performance today. Playing in the heat is not easy, so to be so clinical in front of goal is very pleasing.

"It's something we highlighted we needed to work on this week in training and to see it work is something we're all happy with.

"The girls have had a hectic week and wanted to win all three games, and they've done  exactly  that."

27th

Argyle registered another pre-season win - this time against Devon rivals, Torquay United, at Plainmoor, in front of a capacity 6,000, including about 700 Pilgrims. The Greens had generously offered their share of the gate receipts to the Gulls.

Goals from Ryan Hardie (penalty) and Bali Mumba secured a 2-0 victory.

Argyle lined up with Conor Hazard playing behind a back four of – from right to left – Matty Sorinola, Julio Pleguezuelo, Lewis Gibson and Saxon Earley. With Adam Randell, Darko Gyabi and Jordan Houghton all absent, Caleb Roberts and Adam Forshaw played in the centre of midfield, with Bali Mumba to their left and Freddie Issaka on their right. Up front, Callum Wright played just behind Ryan Hardie.

The Torquay line-up featured former Pilgrim Oscar Threlkeld who was given the captain's armband by new Gulls boss Paul Wotton for his first home game in charge, taking applause from all four sides of the ground.

Argyle suffered a setback early on when, before the 20-minute mark, Roberts limped out of the game, replaced by former Torquay loanee Will Jenkins Davies.

The game was goalless at the break. The first half lacked flow, having been punctuated with several lengthy stoppages because of a number of medical issues in Torquay's Popular Side stand, which housed United and Argyle fans. Happily none had serious consequences.

Shortly after the break, Jenkins Davis was adjudged to have been tripped in the box and Ryan Hardie converted the penalty. Ten minutes later, Bali Mumba scored on the rebound to give the Greens a two-goal lead.

This was the cue for a raft of substitutions, the new team being: Michael Cooper, Nathanael Ogbeta, Dan Scarr, Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker, Mustapha Bundu, Brendan Galloway, Muhamed Tijani, Will Jenkins Davies, Josh Bernard, Jack Matthews who saw out the last stages of the friendly game.

26th

Argyle Youth secured a 4-2 victory over Cliftonville in the SuperCupNI Globe Play-off on Friday morning to round out their week in Northern Ireland.

The Under-13 players had finished second in Group C of the boys' minor competition. They won two out of three of their group stage games, beating IDA Bermuda and Coleraine, losing only to another Northern Irish side, Crusaders, and finished sixth out of 16 teams in the overall standings.

In the semi-final, the young Greens' hard-fought performance against Glenavon ended in heartbreak with a loss on penalties. The game finished 2-2 at full-time, but the Northern Ireland side were victorious on penalties, winning 4-3 in sudden death.

25th

Argyle have signed Icelandic international defender, Victor Palsson on a permanent contract. The 33-year-old has played 44 times for his country - his first cap being in 2014 and his most recent in March 2024. He left his most recent team, Belgian Pro League side, Eupen, earlier this week. He joined Liverpool in 2009 and has subsequently played for various English and Scottish sides, and for teams across Europe.

Palsson, who can play as a right-sided defender or as a defensive midfielder, is reuniting with Argyle boss Wayne Rooney, who was Victor's head coach during his time with DC United.

"I am really pleased we have managed to bring Victor to Argyle," said Rooney. "He is someone I know well having worked together at DC United, and he brings extensive experience to the squad.

"Alongside that, he knows the system we are looking to implement, is good on the ball and will form an integral part of the squad moving forward. I'm looking forward to working with him again as the Sky Bet Championship season approaches."

Argyle Director of Football Neil Dewsnip added: "Victor is someone the recruitment team, Wayne, and Pete identified as the perfect person to come into the squad to strengthen our defensive options.

"He is experienced throughout Europe and is someone who is technically and tactically suited to the system we are trying to implement. He is also a current Iceland international and will add leadership to our young squad.

"We are thrilled to further strengthen the group with Victor's signing and welcome him to Plymouth Argyle."

24th

Ben Waine scored the winning goal for New Zealand U23s in their Group A Olympic match 2-1 win against Guinea U23s at the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice.

23rd

Young Argyle goalkeeper, Zak Baker, has joined Plymouth Parkway on loan. In April, the 19-year-old signed a new one-year deal to remain a Pilgrim.

Redruth-born Zak spent time on loan last season at Tiverton Town, for whom he played nearly 30 games. The loan at part-time side Parkway will allow Baker to train with Argyle for much of the week and link up with his new club for training sessions and matches.

Parkway, who play in the Southern League Premier Division South, have a number of former Argyle young pros and apprentices in their squad.

Ella Stephens has signed for Argyle Women from Devon rivals Torquay United.

The 17-year-old right-sided defender impressed Pilgrims' Head Coach Ryan Perks when she played for the Gulls against Argyle last season. Her first game for the Greens will be against her former side.

In that game, played at Coach Road, Argyle Women completed a second win in a week, although the narrow margin of victory - by two goals to one - perhaps did not reflect the strong performance.

First-half goals from Erin O'Shea and Charlotte Whitmore, either side of an equaliser from former Pilgrim Tiana Campbell, did the trick for an Argyle side that visibly demonstrated their division seniority without truly making that count on the scoresheet.

22nd

Argyle Women secured their first win of pre-season in fine fashion, beating Yeovil Town 6-0 at Manadon Sports Hub.

Ryan Perks' side controlled possession for large spells across the 90 minutes of play and punished their opponents with some strong team build-up and counter-attacking football.

A brace from Charlotte Whitmore and goals from Ellie Sara, Grace Perrins, Jade Berrow and Erin O'Shea secured the victory in comfortable fashion.

21st

Argyle legend and former manager Paul Sturrock was inducted as a Forever Green Icon at an emotional reunion at Home Park on Sunday afternoon.

The former Pilgrims' boss was joined by nine members of the 2003-04 promotion-winning squad, as well as goalkeeping coach Geoff Crudgington and physio Paul Maxwell, to celebrate 20 years since Argyle topped the third tier to secure a second title win in three seasons.

Nearly 200 supporters gathered in Club Argyle for an event full of laughter and nostalgia, alongside former players,

Romain Larrieu, David Worrell, Steve Adams, Ian Stonebridge, Marino Keith, Paul Wotton, David Norris, Hasney Aljofree and Mickey Evans.

20th

Argyle withstood a shock early Cheltenham goal to claim an emphatic 5-1 victory in their pre-season friendly at Whaddon Road.

Strikes from Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker and Mohamed Tijani sent the Greens in 3-1 up at the interval. The second half saw Gibson replace Scarr in defence. Tijani netted his second before a wholesale change of personnel (with the exception of Gibson). Ryan Hardie scored on the rebound to bring the Pilgrims final tally to five.

Argyle first half: Cooper Ogbeta Scarr Cissoko Edwards Whittaker Bundu Gyabi Randell Galloway Tijani

Second half subs: Hazzard Earley Sorinola Roberts Mumba Houghton Matthews Wright Issaka Hardie.

18th

The live EFL coverage will feature: a minimum 155 Championship fixtures; a minimum 38 League One and League Two matches; all 15 play-offs; a minimum 30 Carabao Cup games and three Bristol Street Motors Trophy matches.

17th

Argyle have announced that Argyle Women's first three home games of the season (against Oxford Utd on Sun 25 Aug; Hashtag Utd on Sun 8 Sept and Watford on Sun 15 Sept) will be played at Home Park. Further home games at the Theatre of Greens will depend on the scheduling of the Men's first team's home games.

Two Argyle women have left the Club.

Tamsin Medd-Gill has moved away from the South West. And Lucy Hack has taken up a football scholarship in the USA.

16th

Argyle Women were defeated 5-2 by Cardiff City in their second pre-season game.

The UEFA Women's Champions League qualifiers took the lead in the 23rd minute, before doubling it soon after. A penalty then meant the Bluebirds' went in at half time with a three-goal lead.

Cardiff added a fourth soon after the restart but a change in tactics lead to a 54th minute Argyle goal. The Greens reduced the deficit to two on the half hour, but it was not enough as Cardiff regained a three-goal lead two minutes later. Argyle came close in the 82nd minute with a dangerous free kick, but the 'keeper's diving effort kept the score at 5-2.

Despite the defeat, Head Coach Ryan Perks thought the match in Wales was still a step in the right direction on the run to the start of the season. He said there were missed opportunities but it was an important test against a strong side.

"We just weren't good enough in the first half," he said, "but on the flip side, we switched up the shape in the second half, gave the girls more detail on how we wanted them to set up without the ball, and were a lot more positive.

"We spoke about looking after the ball better, and we did. We created chances and had strong displays on the pitch, but we got punished again for an error.

"It was an excellent second half. We created lots of opportunities and should have converted a few more.

"Cardiff are a strong side and moved the ball well. They've got some top players and were unbeaten in the league last year, so we knew it would be a tough ask and test for us. We want to play teams at their level, so it builds us up for the start of the season."

Argyle men returned from their pre-season camp in Marbella, southern Spain, with Head Coach, Wayne Rooney, praising the players' attitude during training and in their 2-2 draw with South African side, Orlando Pirates.

He said: "It has been really good. The lads have been great. Attitude to training has been first class and we have got a lot of work into them.

"It's never easy in pre-season. You are working the lads physically but mentally as well because there is a lot of information for the players to take in. I have been delighted with the work we have put into the players this week. When we get into the games back home we can start working on what we want from them tactically."

Rooney added: "It's important as team-mates you work well together and you are all pulling in the same direction. It's also very important they get to know each other off the pitch as well, and being over here the players are with each other all day every day. Especially the new players coming in, this really helps them."

On the game against the Pirates, played in the sweltering heat, Rooney commented: "I thought we grew into the game and got a little bit better in the second half and could have went on to win the game in the end. Overall, really pleased with the run-out for the players.

"There were things I want to see, and things I didn't want to see and that's what for pre-season is for. It's about trying to improve, trying to get us playing the way I want us to. There were some things which have to get better and will get better, and some things which I liked and enjoyed.

"It's the first of all our pre-season games but the most important thing was for the players to get back on the pitch, back into a rhythm of playing games. It was against a good team, who made it difficult for us at times. but overall I was pleased."

Vandals have broken into Argyle's training facility at Harper's Park, causing an estimated £5,000 worth of damage

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday evening.

A spokesperson said: "Significant damage was caused to the recently-installed pitch irrigation system, site perimeter fencing and video analysis platform."

A reward will be offered to anyone who can provide information that leads to the identification and prosecution of the offenders.

12th

Argyle drew their opening pre-season friendly against South African side, Orlando Pirates, in searing heat at their training camp in Marbella.

Wayne Rooney's side twice went behind, but goals from Freddie Issaka and Callum Wright salvaged a 2-2 draw in front of the travelling Green Army, after Ryan Hardie saw his penalty saved.

Argyle played a different eleven in each half, with the focus on providing the squad with valuable minutes as preparations continue for the 2024-25 Sky Bet Championship season.

First half team: Cooper, Edwards (capt.), Pleguezuelo, Gibson, Earley, Bundu (Issaka 30), Randell, Roberts, Mumba, Tijani, Waine

Second half team: Hazard, Sorinola, Matthews, Galloway, Ogbeta, Issaka (Cissoko 60), Gyabi, Houghton, Whittaker, Wright, Hardie.

11th

Argyle held an open training session at the Atalya Training Camp where they were making their pre-season preparations. Up to 150 travelling Greens were admitted to watch the session which was followed by a private Q&A with Wayne Rooney and his staff.

9th

Argyle have signed forward Ibrahim Cissoko on a season-long loan from French club Toulouse. Ibrahim becomes the Pilgrims' fourth summer signing, after the recent acquisitions of Nathanael Ogbeta, Muhamed Tijani and Darko Gyabi.

Predominantly playing as a left-winger, the 21-year-old has represented Netherlands U21s and joined Toulouse last summer from NEC Nijmegen for a reported €3million fee. He has also played for VVV Venlo and Vitesse Arnhem.

Ibrahim has already joined the Argyle squad training in Marbella.

Head Coach, Wayne Rooney, welcomed Cissoko's arrival: "We are extremely pleased that Ibrahim has agreed to join us for the season. He is a quick, athletic and technical winger who will add strength to our forward options.

"He is a player that will excite Argyle fans and I know for a fact they will enjoy watching him play."

And Director of Football, Neil Dewsnip, added: "It is a real coup to bring a player of Ibrahim's quality to Argyle.

"He had several options this summer, including interest from the Premier League, but he was really keen to join Argyle after speaking with Wayne and the recruitment team.

"He fits the profile of player we are looking to bring to the club as he is young and exciting, but also has excellent technical qualities.

"I am sure Argyle fans will enjoy watching him play and I am really happy to get another signing done so soon into pre-season."

Ten new first-year apprentices have embarked on their two-year journey with the Argyle under-18s. Eight of the ten have progressed through the Argyle Academy age groups, with two joining from Category One academies.

Kian Burch from Ivybridge is a striker who has already had the opportunity of playing for the under-18s in the Merit League.

Malachi Davy is a full-back who joined the Academy at under-13 level, following a youth career with Liskeard, Bodmin Town and MAP. Malachi has also represented East Cornwall under-15s.

Oscar Dean is a central-midfielder. He signed for the Academy in the under-13 age group and represented them in the SuperCupNI (formerly known as Milk Cup) in Northern Ireland in 2022 as a 14-year-old playing up in the under-18s Premier tournament.

Tegan Finn joined Argyle at under-9 level. He is a prolific wide attacker, who had success in both the Youth Alliance and Merit Leagues last season for the under-18s, scoring 15 goals in all competitions.

Jack Flower is a goalkeeper who joined the Academy in the under-11s and made his debut for the under-18s towards the end of the 2023-24 season. He has played for Plymouth Schools at under-11 level.

Lewis Flowers is a central defender who signed for Argyle at the under-9 level. He made his full debut for the under-18s against Cheltenham Town in the 2023-24 Merit League season.

Toby Haley signed for the Academy at under-9 level after completing the club's pre-Academy. He also represented the Academy in the 2022 SuperCupNI Premier tournament for the under-18s as a 14-year-old.

Sam Lord, an attacking midfielder, has already featured six times for the under-18s in the Youth Alliance and Merit Leagues. He signed for the Academy at under-9 level.

Fletcher Poole is a wide attacking player who has signed for Argyle from Category One academy Derby County, after being with the Rams for four years. He was offered a contract following a successful trial with the Greens.

Lewis Thomas has signed for Argyle from Aston Villa, a Category One academy. The attacking midfielder was offered a contract after a successful trial last season.

8th

Argyle Women lost their opening pre-season game, 3-1 away to Moneyfields FC. The home side went in a goal up at half time, and then doubled their lead shortly after the break.

Argyle, playing in a 3-5-2 formation, were on top in the second half. Fern Orchard scored for the Greens, but they were caught by a late Moneyfields third goal.

Head Coach Ryan Perks believes there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

"We tried out a shape we've not overly worked on in training, asked them to do certain things - and they did them," he said. "There were a few mistakes for the goals, but we probably also should've had a few more ourselves. "

Three of last season's under-16s squad have stepped up into the first team this year. Alongside several trialists, Perks felt they integrated well at an early stage.

"Overall, there were some good individual performances. We're still missing five key squad members, but the first two pre-season games aren't about the results. It's about looking at players and seeing what they can bring to the team."

7th

Argyle men have set off for their training camp in Marbella, southern Spain. During their stay, which will last until 16 July, the Pilgrims will host an open training session on Thursday 11, before a game against South African side Orlando Pirates the following day. The match will take place at the Banús Football Center on Friday, 12 July, with a 7pm kick-off (CEST), and Argyle fans are welcome to attend. Admission is free, with a total capacity of 1,000.

6th

The 2024-25 season will bring a fresh approach to Evergreen, Argyle's supporter network, under a new umbrella: #PastPresentFuture. At the same time, the Women's team will be become part of the scheme.

During its first 18 months of existence, Evergreen members have spread their investments across three departments: the Argyle Academy, first-team operations and sports science. Now, members will be able to decide how to split their contribution - by allocating 100% to #PastPresentFuture, or by splitting it in any desired denomination, such as 30% Past, 30% Present, 40% Future. In the absence of a response, preferences will be automatically updated to 33.3% Argyle Past, 33.3% Argyle Present, 33.3% Argyle Future.

Evergreen Past will go directly to Forever Green, a fund which will assist with the pastoral care of all Forever Green members, ensuring that everyone who has worn the green and white has access to care, training and support should they need it.

Evergreen Present will support the men's and women's first-team operations at Home Park, directly impacting the success on the pitch.

Evergreen Future will continue its backing for the Argyle Academy, ensuring our young footballers across all the age groups are given every opportunity to fulfil their football dreams.

Full details can be found via the Argyle website: www.pafc.co.uk.

Argyle Women's Jess Geach, Kelsey Blight and Roxy Thomas will all step up to the first team squad for the upcoming 2024-25 FA Women's National League season.

The trio have progressed through Argyle's pathway, featuring within squads at all different age groups and following in the footsteps of several current first-team members. Geach and Blight have been in the system from under-12 level, while Thomas joined in the under-10s and was rewarded with a visit to an England Under-15s National Talent Camp a few years ago. Roxy is a left-sided defender, and Jess a centre-back. Kelsey's versatility and technical skillset allow her play in multiple positions, including as striker.

"I think the pathway has been very successful over the last few years while I've been at the football club," said coach, Ryan Perks. "I've alluded to it previously that I probably took the job on knowing the talent which was coming through, and to see them start to break into the first team is fantastic. We're proud of our successful pathway over the last few years."

Argyle have achieved a Silver award in the EFL's Equality Code of Practice - one of just nine clubs to achieve this standard.

The Code is a mandatory assessment that was updated to become a multi-level accreditation scheme on which all 72 EFL clubs are assessed. Criteria look specifically at equality, diversity and inclusion practices which aim to challenge discrimination and behaviour in the stands and on social media, improve the diversity of supporters and ensure the workforce is reflective of the local community.

Throughout the assessment period, Argyle have supported campaigns such as Kick it Out, Her Game Too, Unite for Access, Rainbow Laces and Mental Health Awareness, with dedicated match days and awareness training for both staff and supporters. They have also provided audio descriptive commentary known as Soccer Sight for supporters who are blind or visually impaired, and provided free sanitary items and sensory packs to supporters who need them.

The Club will now work towards achieving the Gold award during the next assessment period during the 2025-26 season.

4th

Freddie Issaka has signed a new deal until 2028. The contract will come into effect when Freddie turns 18, later this month. Truro-born Issaka became Argyle's youngest ever player in 2021, just 34 days after his 15th birthday, when he came on as a substitute in an EFL Trophy game against Newport County.

He has now played 16 times for the first team, including two starts, against Leyton Orient in last season's Carabao Cup first round, and then in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup, against Sutton United.

Freddie signed his first professional contract on his 17th birthday and, as well as featuring in many match day squads for the first team, played a significant part in the Argyle Under-18s' success in 2023/24, as they won both the Youth Alliance and Merit Leagues.

"It's a really exciting time for me and a massive honour," he said. "I think it shows a lot of trust from the club to want to keep me on for that long. It's time for me to show that I owe it to the club, I deserve it and I've earned it. It's time to work hard."

Tyreik Wright has left Argyle for Sky Bet League Two side, Bradford City.

The wing-back joined the Pilgrims in January 2023 and featured 13 times across his year-and-a-half at Home Park. He spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan with Bradford, and will now join the Bantams on a permanent basis.

Argyle's first round Carabao Cup tie against Cheltenham Town will be played at Home Park on Wednesday, 14 August, kicking off at 7.45pm.

For the first time ever, all Carabao Cup matches this season will be available for fans in the UK to watch on Sky Sports – with ours being broadcast on Sky Sports+.

3rd

Two of Argyle's early season games have been selected for coverage on Sky TV. As a consequence, the away tie against QPR at Loftus Road on 24 August will now kick off at 12.30 pm instead of at 3 pm.

The home tie with Luton Town, scheduled for Saturday 28 September will now take place at the Theatre of Greens on Friday 27 September at 8 pm. Both matches will be shown on Sky Sports Football.

2nd

Darko Gyabi has returned to Argyle on a season-long loan - his second spell with the club.

The 20-year old midfielder joined the Pilgrims in January 2024, and played 10 times before his stay at Home Park was cut short, due to a groin injury, meaning he returned to his parent club, Leeds, for treatment.

London-born, Gyabi spent time as a youngster at Millwall before advancing through the Manchester City Academy system, moving to Leeds in 2022 as part of the deal that took Kalvin Phillips in the other direction. He has also been an England international from under-15 to under-20 level.

Argyle Head Coach, Wayne Rooney, commented: "I heard really good reports about Darko from his time with Argyle last season and since watching him closely I was really keen to bring him back to the club.

"He fits the profile of midfielder I like to have within the squad, as he is good on the ball, powerful and athletic, and will fit the style of play I am looking to implement.

"It is a really exciting time with the squad due back for pre-season this week - I am delighted that Darko will be a part of that."

Argyle made their second signing of the day when Muhamed Tijani joined from Slavia Prague on a season's loan, with an option to buy.

The Nigerian former under-20 international moved to Czechia aged 18, to join the youth system of another of the country's leading sides, Banik Ostrava. He had loan spells with Třinec, Karvina and Taborsko for whom he scored 13 goals in 33 games for in the 2021-22 season, in the Czech second tier. Tijani broke into the Ostrava first team in 2022-23, playing 25 times as they finished 11th in the top flight.

He moved to Slavia Prague for approximately £1m in the summer of 2023, and played 19 times, scoring four goals, two of which were in the UEFA Europa League, one a last-ditch winner away to FC Sheriff.

Several Europa League clubs were said to be keen to secure his signature, but Muhamed really bought into the project at Argyle and was desperate to play for Wayne Rooney.

The Argyle Head Coach said: "Muhamed joining further strengthens our forward line and he will bring different attributes to the squad.

"He is big, athletic and can run in behind, but is equally as good at holding the ball up and bringing other players into play.

"He... comes with good pedigree but is also young and keen to improve. We are really looking forward to working with him."

Mickel Miller has left Argyle. The pacy wingback whose contract expired at the end of June has joined League One Huddersfield on a two-year deal.

Miller joined the Greens from Rotherham in the summer of 2022. His stay was marked by injury, but he played 49 times for the Pilgrims, scoring one goal.

On the day on which Argyle Women officially become part of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, Ellie Sara has become the first player to sign an official Plymouth Argyle contract.

Striker Sara was Argyle's leading goalscorer last season, netting 29 goals in all competitions and featuring high in the rankings for goalscorers in the FA Women's National League.

"It's an honour," said Ellie, of signing the landmark deal. "I've grown up through this club. I've loved it since the moment I started playing football. I've lived down here all my life, so to get the first contract is amazing.

"I think we've all got to push on next season, to see if we can get [into the] top six. I think the girls have the ability to do that."

Argyle finished ninth in the table last season, 15 points above the safety line, and will be looking to build on that when the new season kicks off in mid-August.
