Greens on Screen started its life in 1999 before many of the football sites that we are familiar with today, including Plymouth Argyle's own official site. Greens on Screen is dedicated to the sights, sounds and history of Plymouth Argyle Football club. It is owned and run by the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive, a charity dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and display of the heritage of our great football club.

The site owes its existence to Steve Dean.Without Steve's dedication and commitment for over 25 years, GoS would not exist and be the valued and loved resource for all football fans that it is today. The site is truly the envy of many clubs, and we owe a huge debt to Steve for his tireless work, and continued support behind the scenes.

Greens on Screen's first page was published in January 1999. Its early purpose was to bring Plymouth Argyle a little closer to those unable to see their team, and whilst it has changed a great deal over the years, its core themes - sights and sounds for Westcountry exiles - still stand. The site was very lucky to take on the content of Trevor Scallan's Semper Viridis in the summer of 2007, and in 2009 launched GoS-DB, a wealth of facts and figures from PAFC's history. A year later, we embarked on a complete history of Argyle, with much-valued contributions from chapter authors. Greens on Screen was taken over by its new custodians, The Argyle Archive, in 2024.

Greens on Screen is an amateur website and proud of it. It is run by a team of volunteers from the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive (Argyle Archive). Without the hard work and much-valued contributions of these volunteers, running the site would not be possible. Greens on Screen is self-taught and as a result, a little bit quirky.

Greens on Screen remains advertisement free, which means we are grateful for the generous support of our donors and the work of our volunteers to help keep it free of promotions. If you would like to support the work of Greens on Screen, please consider donating to the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive.

GoS's sole aim is to be a service to fellow supporters, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate Argyle's history for many years to come.

Saturday 31st August 2024

Argyle are still searching for their first league win of the Sky Bet Championship season, after a 1-0 home defeat by Stoke City. In an open game that threatened numerous goals, it was a sole strike that won it for the visitors. Million Manhoef, who scored when the sides met in April in Staffordshire, was on the mark again, grabbing a goal with seven minutes of the 90 to play.

Argyle: Hazard, Mumba, Houghton (Forshaw 77), Szucs, Cissoko (Bundu 77), Edwards, Hardie (Tijani 61), Whittaker, Gibson, Gyabi (Obafemi 61), Randell. Substitutes: Grimshaw, Ogbeta, Pleguezuelo, Wright, Palsson.

On a frantic final day in the current football transfer window, Argyle scooped the last-minute acquisition of attacking midfielder Rami Al Hajj on a three-year contract. The 22-year-old signed for an undisclosed fee from Danish club Odense, becoming the Greens' fifth permanent signing of the summer, on top of four loanees. His deadline-day arrival came too late for him to be included in the squad for the home game against Stoke City.

Rami - whose surname means pilgrim in Arabic - was born in Lebanon and moved with his family to Sweden when he was two years old. He played youth football for Falkenbergs in Sweden but, aged 17, joined Heerenveen in the Netherlands.

Breaking through with the Eredivisie side, he played 77 times for their first team, scoring four times, before a move to Denmark in the summer of 2023.

Signing for Odense, also known as OB, Al Hajj played 32 games, racking up four goals and eight assists, despite OB's relegation to the second tier of Danish football. He also has eight caps for Sweden Under-21s.

"Rami is a player we have been tracking for a while," said Argyle Head Coach Wayne Rooney. "He is a creative, skilful attacking midfielder who will complement our forward line perfectly.

"He has good experience for his age but also has lots of room for growth and development. We are really pleased that we have managed to bring him here permanently and add him to our eight other summer signings."

Director of Football Neil Dewsnip added: "Rami is a creative ball-playing midfielder and will strengthen our options in forward areas.

"He shone for Odense last season, contributing goals and assists, and impressed during his time with Heerenveen in Eredivisie. He also comes with international pedigree at age group level, and we believe he will make a positive impact on the Championship."

However, Argyle failed in their pursuit of another Scandinavian player - 25-year-old Ghanian-born, Michael Baidoo, a midfielder for the Swedish side, Elfsborg.

Allegedly, Baidoo was willing to join the Pilgrims but the Elfsborg board refused to release him. Baidoo then wrote to the board asking for a transfer, but to no avail.

Deadline-day rumours linking Argyle with Leeds' forward Joe Geldhart also came to naught.

Two more of Argyle's players have been called up for international duty.

Midfielder, Darko Gyabi, on loan from Leeds, has been selected for England Elite squad (formerly the under-20s) for two games on 6 September against Turkey and 10 September against Romania.

Freddie Issaka, the Greens' 18-year-old striker will join Wales under-19s for two games in Spain - against Turkmenistan on 7 September and Azerbaijan on 9 September. Freddie will sit out the second game of his three-match suspension meted out at QPR in Argyle's home fixture against Stoke City at Home Park on Saturday.

29th

Conor Hazard has been called up by Northern Ireland for their opening two games in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League campaign. He is one of three goalkeepers selected by manager, Michael O'Neill, alongside Bolton's Luke Southwood and Bailey Peacock-Farrell of Birmingham City.

Defender Brendan Galloway has been selected for the Zimbabwe squad for their first two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games by recently-appointed German-born boss Michael Nees. Brendan will be available for Argyle's home game against Stoke City on Saturday, will fly to Africa the following day, but will be back and available for the Greens' next home fixture against Sunderland on 14 September.

And Mustapha Bundu will also be in AFCON qualifying action with Sierra Leone. Chad are their first opponents on Friday 6 September, before they meet Zambia on Monday, 9 September.

Argyle Women won their determining round match against Bridgwater United, 4-2, ensuring a place in this season's FA Women's National League Cup.

Progress was not without its scares: although Argyle led through Giota Papaioannou, Bridgwater were level at the break and led early in the second half, but things turned in the middle of the second period, with Georgia Wilson's equaliser and a brace from Ellie Sara all coming in the space of eight minutes.

However, despite the victory, Head Coach Ryan Perks is still looking for consistency in his side's performances.

"Cup football is about getting through and progressing," Perks said. "We've done that, but the performance level wasn't good enough. We had 10 minutes in the second half after we made some changes, where we got a reaction, dominated and scored three - that changed the game.

"We weren't at the races at all, but it's cup football, job done. We're through to the next round and we look forward to the draw."

28th

Argyle Head Coach, Wayne Rooney, felt that his team did not test the opposition enough in their 2-0 away defeat to Watford in the Carabao Cup second round last night.

Rooney played a largely changed side after the 1-1 draw with QPR, to give various players a chance and partly with an eye on Saturday's league fixture against Stoke. These included debutant goalkeeper, Dan Grimshaw: his early mistake led to the first Watford goal but he later made some stunning saves.

"I think it was probably a fair result in the end," said Rooney after the game. "Throughout the game, there was some good stuff, but I felt, in the final third, we had to do a little bit more and put them under a bit more pressure, especially in the second half.

"There were times we could have put the ball in the box, and we didn't, we turned that down. We played some nice football, but we need more than that. We have to be more aggressive, both in possession and out of possession.

"We didn't do enough to put them under enough pressure. We weren't ruthless enough. We weren't clinical enough. We didn't test them enough in behind. We didn't put enough crosses in the box. It's something we need to look at to work on."

Argyle rejected an undisclosed offer for Morgan Whittaker from Burnley. The deal was understood to involve a loan fee with an option to buy if they were promoted to the Premier League.

Argyle Women have welcomed Katie Grigg back to their ranks. She rejoins the Pilgrims from Devon rivals, Exeter.

The 20-year-old defender joined Argyle for the 2020-21 campaign from the Grecians' Girls Development Centre and made four appearances in Green before returning to Exeter where she featured 61 times for their first and reserve teams.

Head Coach Ryan Perks said: "It's great to welcome Katie back to the club. We allowed her to play women's football at a young age, and she showed quality during that spell.

"She adds some more strength in depth in the squad and we are looking forward to working with her and further developing her game."

Katie said that she was excited to get started: "Everything's been positive, and everyone's been welcoming... both the management staff and the girls,"

"I'm just really excited to get started and play somewhere close to home."

Argyle are out of the Carabao Cup following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Watford at Vicarage Road. Hornets centre-forward Mileta Rajovic scored a goal in each half to give Watford safe passage into round three, in a game where both sides had made significant changes to their line-ups.

Argyle: Grimshaw, Ogbeta, Houghton (Randell), Pleguezuelo, Szucs, Wright, Obafemi, Bundu (Cissoko), Gyabi (Jenkins Davies), Galloway (Gibson), Sorinola (Hardie). Substitutes (not used): Hazard, Mumba, Edwards, Whittaker.

Argyle's Under-18s lost 6-1 to Cheltenham Town in the opening match of the U18s Professional Development League Cup group stages on Tuesday.

Despite taking the lead in the second minute through Harry Shields' penalty, the Robins continued to find the back of the net for the rest of the match in front of their home crowd.

Head Coach Jamie Lowry said: "Today was a complete opposite performance from Saturday. They didn't work hard, didn't compete, didn't run around, and conceded four appalling goals from set plays. The willingness to compete and the desire and attitude to run around was not there today and that's why we got punished.

"It's a good opportunity for the boys to have a bit of a reality check after Saturday, and to never get too high or too low when we win and lose. It's super disappointing and frustrating but it's another learning opportunity..."

Under-18s captain Joel Sullivan said: "As a team, we take full responsibility for the performance today. We know that the standards at this football club are much higher than what we showed and that the result today is unacceptable.

"We all know that we haven't had the start to the season that we would have wanted, so now it's our responsibility to improve and get results out of games.

"We know that we have the quality within the team... Now it's about looking to build our confidence and consistency to start being successful on the pitch and making sure results like today never happen again."

26th

Conor Hazard has been included in the EFL Championship team of the week.

Argyle's FA Women's National League Cup Determining Round fixture against Bridgwater United on Thursday has moved to a neutral venue of Coach Road, Newton Abbot, approximately midway between the two clubs..

The game will now kick off at 7pm on Thursday, 29 August.

Wayne Rooney pronounced himself proud of his Pilgrims as they held on, against the odds, to a 1-1 draw in the televised game against QPR at Loftus Road yesterday lunchtime.

Despite the sendings off of Adam Forshaw in the first half and Freddie Issaka in added time at the end of the second, the Greens showed great resilience to gain a vital point.

"I was pleased with] the character we showed," said Rooney. "The determination, energy, aggression to get to the ball; I thought the back four and the goalkeeper were excellent, heading balls out of the box, getting blocks in. I felt it was a deserved point for the work we put in.

"The players who step on the pitch, they have to represent me and what I want. I want players to have character, have belief, put tackles in and play with energy. I felt we did that.

"We got the equaliser and then the red card changes everything.

"It's a silly tackle from Forsh when he is on the other card. He knows that." said Rooney.

"I really felt we'd got full control of the game. We started to dominate in possession. We were getting our attacking players in some really dangerous areas, and I felt the goal was coming. It's a great strike by Morgan to get us back in the game.

"We didn't quite manage to take the ball in the second half, but the other side of the game - defending the box. stopping crosses, blocks: I thought it was fantastic. Conor obviously helps us out with some big saves as well.

"Everyone wants to see entertainment and good football, but that other side of the game is just as good as well when you get that right."

The fans, many of whom had set off in the early hours, showed their appreciation for the performance at the final whistle with prolonged applause to which the players responded.

"The support was absolutely outstanding," said Rooney. "They pushed the players on towards the end when it got difficult.

"I'm sure every fan who was here watching the game, and fans who were watching the game on TV, would be proud of the team today because I felt we kept going, under difficult circumstances.

"As a fan, you want to see a team who's together, and a team who are putting the effort in who deserve to wear the shirt. I felt they saw that today. The noise they were making and the reaction at the end to us getting the point.

"Of course, we wanted to come in and get three points, but with everything that happened in the game, I think the point caps an excellent performance."

Argyle Women succumbed to three second-half goals by visitors, Oxford United, to lose 3-1 in their first league match at Home Park this season.

The spirited Greens led at half time through Taya Pomfret's early goal, with an organised and committed display but could not maintain their advantage after the break with Oxford's third coming five minutes from time.

24th

A frantic, action-packed 1-1 draw at Loftus Road ended with Argyle earning a point that felt like a victory against Queens Park Rangers. Rangers took the lead inside three minutes, as Michael Frey's near-post header from a corner fizzed into the net. After the home side's fast start, Argyle settled, played some controlled football, and deservedly levelled when Morgan Whittaker rifled home from distance, taking advantage of some loose control in the QPR ranks. Immediately, though, Adam Forshaw was sent off for a second caution, and the complexion of the game drastically changed. Naturally, QPR piled on the pressure, and Argyle's remaining players were asked to cling on to the game, despite the chances coming their way. Even with substitute Freddie Issaka being sent off late in the game, the nine-men of Argyle saw the game over the line in dramatic style.

Argyle: Hazard, Mumba (Szucs), Cissoko (Issaka), Edwards, Hardie (Obafemi), Whittaker, Gibson, Gyabi (Houghton), Randell, Galloway (Ogbeta), Forshaw. Substitutes (not used): Baker, Pleguezuelo, Wright, Bundu.

In an amusing postscript, MotM, Connor Hazard, whose stunning saves kept Argyle in the game, dropped his Sky award which was presented to him live on air by goalscorer, Morgan Whittaker, much to the latter's amusement and the former's embarrassment.

Argyle under-18s chalked up their first win of the season in style, beating Devon rivals Exeter City 3-1 at Tiverton in the opening round of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup.

The tie was level 0-0 at half-time but, immediately after the restart, Exeter were awarded and converted a penalty.

Argyle's change in formation and high press worked positively, with goals from Kian Burch, Harry Shields and Fletcher Poole which were enough to turn the tie in Argyle's favour.

Head Coach Jamie Lowry said: "It's a much better feeling, and much better performance as well obviously. The boys were really good.

"I think we were fantastic at creating chances today. It could have been a lot more. I think they defended well, had maybe two or three clearances off the line and got some blocks in.

"I thought we were absolutely fantastic, in terms of our attacking play and then being a real threat in possession. Overall, really pleasing and a big tick in terms of what we're looking for this season."

23rd

After weeks of speculation and links with various goalkeepers, Argyle have signed shot-stopper, Daniel Grimshaw, from Blackpool in a permanent deal, for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old stopper signed after the midday deadline, so was not eligible to be part of the squad for Saturday lunchtime's game at Queens Park Rangers.

Born in Salford, Grimshaw is a product of the Manchester City Academy, the club he supported as a boy. Heplayed for City's under-19s and development sides, as well as being loaned out to Hemel Hempstead then Belgian side Lommel.

In summer 2021, Grimshaw signed for Blackpool. He became the undisputed first choice in 2023-24, playing all but one league game, and keeping 18 clean sheets.

Argyle Head Coach, Wayne Rooney, said: "We are delighted that Daniel has agreed to join us. When we knew Michael was leaving, we moved quickly to sign Daniel as a key target to strengthen the goalkeeping department.

"It has taken slightly longer than we would have liked to bring him to Argyle, but we were always insistent that we wanted to bring in the right goalkeeper and not rush into signing just anyone. He will challenge Conor for that starting spot and I am really pleased we have managed to bring him here permanently."

Argyle Director of Football Neil Dewsnip added: "Daniel fits the exact profile of player we are looking to bring to Argyle.

"He has EFL experience with Blackpool but is also young and has so much room for growth and development.

"His style of play fits into the way Wayne is trying to play and we are really pleased that Daniel becomes our eighth signing of the summer window."

Grimshaw will wear the number 31 shirt.

In a surprise, late-night (10.30 pm) announcement, after the team had already reached London ahead of the Saturday lunch-time game against QPR, Argyle unveiled their seventh signing of the summer - 24-year-old Michael Obafemi on loan from Burnley for the rest of the season. The Pilgrims beat off interest from a number of other Championship and League One clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield.

The Dublin-born Irish international spent time at various English clubs as a youngster, eventually coming through the ranks at Southampton. Aged 17, he was their second-youngest player behind Luke Shaw. He made 39 appearances for the Saints, 32 in the Premier League, mostly as a substitute, scoring five goals. Early in the 2021-22 season, he signed for Championship side, Swansea City, for whom he scored 12 times in 33 games that campaign.  Towards the end of the 2022-23 season, he joined Burnley on loan. Having played a part in their promotion to the Premier League, his transfer to the Clarets was made permanent. Last season, he played twice in the PL before going on loan to Millwall.

Obafemi made his international debut for Ireland in 2018 and has earned 12 caps. He has scored two international goals, both in the Nations League.

Argyle Head Coach Wayne Rooney commented: "We are thrilled that we have managed to secure the services of Michael. He was really keen to come and be a part of what we are building here at Argyle.

"He fits the profile of player I want as part of the squad and complements the style of play we are looking to implement.

Director of Football Neil Dewsnip added: "We have beaten off several Championship sides to bring Michael to the football club.

"He has excellent pedigree having played at both Championship and Premier League level throughout his career and will further strengthen our forward line.

"He's quick, powerful and scores goals, and we are really excited that he has decided to join us for the rest of the season."

Michael Obafemi will wear the number 14 shirt.

20th

Argyle held an open training session at Home Park with almost 5,000 fans in attendance.

Head Coach, Wayne Rooney, was pleased at Argyle's 1-1 draw with Hull City at Home Park on Saturday, but still wants a bit more from the team. He found it hard to quarrel with the result, but still felt that his side probably missed a good chance to get their first victory of the league season.

After being second best in their opening weekend loss at Sheffield Wednesday six days prior, a much-improved Argyle showed aggression and snap in challenges, pressing Hull early and creating numerous chances, especially from high turnovers.

"I think it was a lot more encouraging – obviously - than last week's game," Rooney said.

"We played with good energy in getting to the ball. I'm a little bit disappointed with not being clinical enough. I think we created enough good enough chances.

"A big part of our game plan was to try to win the ball back high, then take advantage.

"We did it, especially early on. We got into some really good positions, but I just felt we rushed it a little bit.

"I was disappointed to concede, but it's a great strike by the lad.

"I thought the lads gave everything today, that was the most pleasing thing. After last week, I think they showed the commitment and energy - they wanted to win. We tried to win the game, created by far the better chances, and unfortunately it wasn't to be. We'll do a bit more work on the training pitch, with our finishing, trying to improve that."

A 16,000+ crowd gave Rooney a rousing welcome for his first home league game.

"I thought the fans were excellent today, again; they gave me a great reception, which I'm grateful for. Hopefully we can keep picking up points over the next few weeks."

Argyle's second round Carabao Cup fixture away to Watford has been confirmed for Tuesday 27 August, with a 7.45 pm kick off at Vicarage Road.

18th

Argyle Women fell to a 4-0 defeat away to Cheltenham Town in their opening game of the 2024-25 National League Southern Premier Division campaign.

Two goals in either half was enough for the Robins, who took their chances at a good time to punish Argyle.

Defensive midfielder, Imy Crawford clocked up her 100th appearance in that game.

A product of local Cornish football, Imy made her debut for Argyle Women as a 16-year-old, in October 2020. A

17th

Argyle have their first point of the season, following a 1-1 draw at Home Park against Hull City. After a goalless first period, Ibrahim Cissoko put Argyle in front with a fierce drive, following some neat footwork in the area, but the lead lasted 11 minutes before Hull captain Lewie Coyle bent in an effort off the post. Neither side ever truly had a strong upper hand; Hull will probably feel they finished each half the stronger, Argyle had the greater number of chances which called Ivor Pandur into action.

Argyle: Hazard, Mumba, Cissoko (Issaka), Edwards, Hardie (Waine), Whittaker, Bundu (Gyabi), Gibson, Randell (Houghton), Galloway, Forshaw (Wright). Substitutes (not used): Baker, Ogbeta, Pleguezuelo, Szucs.

Charlotte Whitmore has become the latest member of the Argyle Women's squad to sign an official contract with the club ahead of the 2024-25 season. The 22-year-old joins Ellie Sara, Imy Crawford, and Giota Papaioannou in signing for the Greens.

Charlotte has scored 22 goals in 62 games for Argyle and is excited for the season ahead.

"I'm buzzing," Charlotte said. "It's a big step forward for the club and myself. I'm just excited to get the season going now.

"It's been good to see the growth here. This is my third season here now and it's good to see the club moving forward and taking big steps. There's a lot more support and growth within the women's side of things. It's great to see.

Women's Head Coach Ryan Perks said: "It's been a long process with Charlotte trying to get things over the line, but we're glad she's decided to stay at the football club.

"She offers a lot to the team and her work rate is second to none. She's quality on the ball, scores and sets up lots of goals, so, it's great to get this deal over the line and keep her at the football club for another year, hopefully longer after."

16th

Argyle Under-18s suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Gillingham in the South Youth Alliance League at Millennium Fields.

The visiting side's winner came from Cruz Beszant's volley in the final moments of the game. The midfielder got the shot away, miraculously missing all the bodies in the box and leaving Dan Holman unsighted on its way into the back of the net.

Under-18's Head Coach Jamie Lowry said: "Performance-wise, again, we started well. In the first 20-30 minutes, we had some opportunities, put them on the back foot and they went down, got into our box, had one shot in the first half, and scored. We then had a mountain to climb again.

"We just weren't brave enough to pass the ball and if we're not passing the ball, then we've got no kind of structure. That's our strength. If we don't pass the ball, we've got no threat.

"We did play better second half, and looked a bit more of a threat, but again, moments at the end of the game, [we] don't stop the cross, don't get a big enough clearance and don't do enough to block the goal."

15th

Argyle Head Coach Wayne Rooney was pleased with the Greens' performance in beating Cheltenham Town to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup. The team needed a reaction following their woeful 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

"I'm pleased," said Rooney. "I thought it was a good performance. These games can always be tricky when you're playing lower league opposition, but I wanted a reaction from the game on Sunday and I felt I got that.

"After Sunday, it cheered me up a little bit. There's always things you can do better. In the first half, we had to be a little bit more patient at times. I think we were trying to force the ball forwards, which played into their hands, when they defend with a back five and they can make it difficult for you. You have to be patient and draw them out to create opportunities.

"I thought second half, we were much more in control, moved the ball a lot quicker, created chances, could have scored more goals. I think that's one thing we need to improve on. We need to be more clinical."

More than 12,000 turned out to watch the Greens' performance. The boss declared himself pleased with the attendance and the reaction.

"I was delighted with the turnout today. I think especially after Sunday, which was a difficult day for all of us: for myself, for the coaches, for players, for fans.

"I thought the attendance today and the atmosphere was really good from the fans, giving me a nice welcome as well.

"I'm delighted to leave tonight with a victory and to be in the next round."

Argyle have been drawn away to Watford in the second round, with the date and time to be confirmed.

After weeks of speculation, linking him with various Championship and Premier League teams, Michael Cooper has left Argyle.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper has signed for Sheffield United for a fee which has the potential to break Argyle's outgoing transfer record.

The Blades and Argyle have also agreed performance-related add-ons which could increase the future total fee, and a clause which means that the Greens would net a percentage of the profit from any future transfer involving Cooper.

Born in Exeter, Cooper signed for the Pilgrims at the age of 11 and advanced through the Academy, often under the tutelage of former Argyle 'keeper, Rhys Wilmot.

His first-team debut was in October 2017. As an apprentice, aged 18, he came on as a substitute for the injured Kyle Letheren at a league game at Blackburn's Ewood Park, making some heroic saves. His second appearance was also as a substitute - in the final game of the 2018-19 season which saw Argyle relegated.

The following season, Cooper deputised for loanee Alex Palmer as Argyle bounced back with promotion. He was then made first-choice keeper for the first game of the 2020-21 season in League One and proceeded to play every league game for the next two full seasons.

The following season, after 121 consecutive league games between the sticks, he injured his knee at Sheffield Wednesday, in February, which meant he missed the closing months of a promotion-winning campaign.

Last season, Cooper returned from injury in October, but managed just nine games before succumbing to a separate knee issue. He returned to play the final ten games of Argyle's season, showing his prowess and helping the Greens secure their Championship status.

Meanwhile, the search for a replacement goalkeeper goes on, as Argyle are linked with a number of possible recruits in the English league and beyond.

14th

Three second-half goals took Argyle into the second round of the Carabao Cup as the Pilgrims saw off Cheltenham Town with a 3-0 win at Home Park. Ben Waine, Ryan Hardie and substitute Mustapha Bundu put the game beyond the Robins, who kept Argyle at bay for some time, but could not withstand the Greens' smart play after the interval.

Argyle: Hazard, Mumba, Pleguezuelo, Szucs, Edwards, Hardie (Sorinola), Wright (Bundu), Gyabi (Forshaw), Randell,Waine (Cissoko), Issaka (Whittaker). Substitutes (not used): Holman, Ogbeta, Gibson, Jenkins Davies.

Argyle have released this season's third kit. Taking inspiration from the 1995-96 96 away shirt, it's mainly yellow in colour with dashes of green on the sleeves, partnered with black shorts and yellow socks.

The third kit features the logo of Beehive Homes SW on its front, a subsidiary of the club's front-of-shirt partner Classic Builders.

"Angry, upset, disappointed and, I think, surprised," was Argyle Head Coach Wayne Rooney's reaction to his team's 4-0 loss at Hillsborough in their first league game of the season.

"We didn't do the basics of the game well [today]. That's running, playing with aggression, tackling, getting to the ball, staying with runners, defending crosses. Everything we spoke about before the game, which we felt we had to do today to make sure we could try and get a result, wasn't there.

"We expected the start of the game to be the way it was. We know the atmosphere is really good here. I felt if we could get through the first 20 minutes, we could then grow into the game. We got through the first 20 minutes and then we had a couple of openings, but I thought we were sloppy with the ball.

"We weren't brave enough to take the ball in tight areas. Sheffield Wednesday pressed us well and we didn't deal with that well enough. From our point of view the goals we conceded were [soft]. We knew what Sheffield Wednesday's threat is; they were first in the league last year from crossed goals and cutbacks. We didn't defend them well enough - and we've worked on that, so I'm really disappointed with them.

"We got a couple of chances towards the end, switching the play and creating one-v-one situations, but we didn't do that well enough [in the game]. We didn't hold on to the ball well enough to actually make our shape and get into our shape, how we want to go and attack moving forward."

"We have to try and move on," said Rooney. "It's my first competitive game at the club and you don't want it to end the way it has today.

"I think quite a few players today were nowhere near good enough and nowhere near at the level they can be. I've said to the players in there, you can lose games of football - that happens - but I never want to be coming in again, like today's game, saying that I felt that we weren't getting to the ball, we weren't tackling, we weren't picking up second balls.

"That's the basics of the game. That's what you have to do in every game, and then it allows you to then use your quality - that wasn't there today. It's not acceptable from that point of view.

"The players have an opportunity now. There will be some changes on Wednesday for the game." (against Cheltenham in the Carabao Cup). "The players who come into the team, or the players who play on Wednesday, they've got an opportunity to show that they deserve to start the next game after Wednesday."

Argyle's season began with defeat at Hillsborough on Sunday, as the Pilgrims lost 4-0 to Sheffield Wednesday. Jamal Lowe gave the Owls a deserved lead at half-time, before the same player's header across goal struck Brendan Galloway and deflected in, shortly after the restart. Josh Windass sealed victory, not that it was in much doubt, with a third goal with nine minutes to go, and Michael Smith rubbed it in with a fourth deep into stoppage time.

Argyle: Hazard, Ogbeta (Mumba), Cissoko (Issaka), Whittaker, Bundu (Wright), Gibson, Gyabi, Galloway, Tijani (Hardie), Forshaw, Palsson. Substitutes (not used): Cooper, Pleguezuelo, Szucs, Edwards, Randell.

Argyle Women concluded their pre-season preparations on Sunday with a 5-0 win over Torquay United at Manadon Sports Hub.

Charlotte Whitmore and new signing Georgia Wilson bagged a brace each, with captain Panagiota Papaioannou scoring the Greens' other goal.

Despite the scoreline, Head Coach Ryan Perks, hoped for a stronger performance prior to the season opener against Cheltenham next weekend.

"I think we lowered our levels a little bit from the game at Manchester United," Perks told Argyle TV. "It sounds weird when you get a 5-0 win that you're a bit disappointed with it, but we had words at the half around how we wanted them to play, and they came out in the second half and played a lot better.

"[There were] some positives, but we also had a couple of players come off with a few little niggles, which isn't ideal the week before the season. We'll try and look after them this week for Cheltenham this weekend."

Josh Bernard and Jack Matthews, have joined Tavistock AFC on loan.

The recent Academy graduates who penned their first professional contracts with Argyle this summer will now head to The Lambs to gain valuable first team experience in the Southern League Division One South. They follow in the footsteps of several former Pilgrims who plied their trade at Langsford Park.

Argyle Under-18s were defeated 3-1 by Milton Keynes Dons in their opening fixture of the South Youth Alliance League season.

Having fallen two goals behind, Sam Lord scored Argyle's only goal in the dying minutes, but it was not enough to force a comeback. The hosts scored their final goal with the last kick of the game to seal victory.

Head Coach Jamie Lowry said: "I'm disappointed. We had three chances that we didn't take. That gave MK Dons some confidence and they grew into the game.

"There is lots we can take away from it, to go again with and learn and develop from, but we do have a chance to go and put it right next Friday against Gillingham."

Argyle Women have re-signed Georgia Wilson from Reading where she played last season in the FA Women's Championship alongside the Greens' other recent recruits, Ava Kuyken and Lulu Jarvis.

The 22-year-old, Plymouth-born midfielder featured for Argyle in the 2022-23 campaign, playing 22 games and scoring six goals, before she left to join the Royals.

Georgia began her footballing career with Bristol City in the Women's Super League, then moved to AaB Women in the Danish Women's League for the 2021-22 season, before joining Argyle, her hometown club.

"I'm really happy to be back," Georgia told Argyle TV. "This club feels like home to me and has a really special place in my heart. I'm looking forward to helping out the younger players. They're so talented, the girls that have come through and I hope I can guide them and help them out this season with my experience."

"It is great have Georgia back in the fold," said Head Coach Ryan Perks. "We know what she is capable of from her time with us previously, and now she comes back at a great time for us, as we look to push on under the main club umbrella.

"She gives us experience and quality in the middle of the field. I think it is a move that works perfectly for both parties."

Argyle were named champions in the Select Soccer invitational, formerly the Oakham tournament, in Leicestershire earlier this month.

At the end of July and the start of August, a squad of under-16s and under-15s players represented the Greens in the tournament, losing only one game on the way to victory.

The Young Pilgrims started the group stages with four consecutive wins, beating Kerry FC, NCE New York, Stamford AFC, and Napa United of California. Argyle's only loss came in the final group stage fixture against Independent Schools FA (ISFA).

Finishing on 12 points, Argyle secured a place in 'top three' play-off and eventually won the competition after beating Napa United in the semi-final and ISFA in the final.

Argyle have signed Hungarian defender, Kornel Szucs, for an undisclosed fee, from their top division side Kecskemeti. The 22-year-old is able to play at centre-back, right-back and as a right-wing-back. He becomes the Greens' sixth signing of the summer.

Kornel is from Miskolc, the fourth largest city in Hungary, and came through the ranks at the city's leading club, Diosgyor. After playing for the club's second team in the nation's third tier of football, he played in the division above during loan spells with Kazincbarcika, and notched 51 appearances for Diosgyor's first team.

In the summer of 2023, Szucs signed for Kecskemeti, and played 28 times last season, scoring two goals, as his side finished sixth in the top division. He has also played three times for Hungary Under-21s.

Welcoming Szucs' arrival, Argyle Head Coach, Wayne Rooney, said: "He is a very talented young player, able to play in several defensive positions. As well as his versatility, he is very athletic, is comfortable on the ball, and is well suited to the way we want to play.

"I am looking forward to seeing him in action for us."

Director of Football, Neil Dewsnip, stressed how Szucs' acquisition reflected Argyle's wide-ranging recruitment process. "Our team do an excellent job identifying players who we think will augment our current squad, and Kornel will do that. He is a good player now, and we think he has scope to be even better. I am delighted he has joined us."

Argyle recorded a satisfactory 1-0 away victory at Milton Keynes Dons in their last pre-season friendly game. Their goal was scored by Ryan Hardie in the 68th minute, seconds after he had come on as a substitute.

The Greens lined up from the outset with Lewis Gibson joining Brendan Galloway in the heart of the defence, in front of Conor Hazard in goal, and with Nathanael Ogbeta and Victor Palsson as full-backs. Ibrahim Cissoko and Morgan Whittaker played on the attacking flanks, with Jordan Houghton and Adam Randell in central positions. Up front, Muhamed Tijani was joined by Freddie Issaka.

The first half was a rather pedestrian affair, with moments of excitement - notably after 70 seconds when a Tijani volley struck the outside of the post and went wide. Just before the half hour, each side had two opportunities to score, and with Argyle, in the shape of Randell, once again hitting the post before half time.

The second half was largely similarly devoid of chances. Argyle made three substitutions on 66 minutes (Mumba for Ogbeta; Forshaw for Houghton, and Hardie for Tijani and a further three 10 minutes later (Bundu for Cissoko; Wright for Issaka, and Pleguezuelo for Palsson). Wright could have extended the Pilgrims' lead on 90 minutes but was denied by the Dons' keeper.

Argyle Women have signed Ava Kuyken from Women's Championship side, Reading, where the midfielder played alongside another recent Green signing, Lulu Jarvis..

Ava, 23, started her career with Women's Super League side Arsenal, where she played 11 times during the 2018-19 in which Arsenal won the title. After taking her A-Levels, Kuyken moved Stateside, taking up a scholarship with NCAA Division 1 side Florida Gators where she stayed for two years.

Back in the UK, Kuyken spent spells with Bristol City and Hibernian before she joined Reading for the 2023-24 campaign. However, an ACL injury pre-season meant that she did not appear for the Royals.

The midfielder is now looking for a bounce-back year amongst familiar faces in green.

"I'm excited to get started," Kuyken said. "I think it's a club with ambition so I'm excited to be part of that journey, grow with the team and see where it can go.

Argyle Women's unbeaten run of form in pre-season was extended, as they drew 1-1 with Manchester United Under-21s in a back-and-forth encounter at the Red Devils' training facility, Carrington.

United opened the scoring early on, but Charlotte Whitmore's penalty shortly before half-time levelled matters. Whitmore converted from the spot after Fern Orchard was taken down in the box following some crafty play from the goalscorer.

With the Greens on top in the second period, Ella Stephens was fouled in the area, but Whitmore's second attempt from the penalty spot was saved by the opposition keeper with the final action of the game.

Central defender and fans' favourite, Dan Scarr, has joined Wrexham for an undisclosed fee. The League One side have been promoted twice in the last two seasons.

Scarr was well into his 20s before he became a full-time footballer, joining his boyhood side Birmingham City, from non-league Stourbridge. After a loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers, he went to Walsall, from where he moved to Argyle. He signed for the Pilgrims in August 2021 and played 109 times, 36 of which were in the promotion-winning 2022-23 season. He also made a vital contribution in Argyle holding on to Championship status last campaign.

Argyle Women have signed attacking midfielder Lulu Jarvis from Women's Super League side Brighton & Hove Albion, becoming the Greens' second summer signing. She boasts experience not only with the top-level side, but with Reading in the Championship last season.

Jarvis, 20, rose through the Brighton academy, from the under-16s to the under-21s, and featured in the WSL against Tottenham Hotspur. She has been training with Argyle for several weeks and has caught the eye as a trialist. She has now made the deal official.

Panagiota Papaioannou and Imy Crawford have signed official contracts with Argyle Women. Papaioannou is in her seventh season in green, having made her debut in 2018-19 and recently joined the list of centurions as captain last campaign. The duo have amassed more than 200 combined appearances for the Greens.

"I'm really excited," Giota told Argyle TV. "It's something I've dreamed of since joining the club six years ago. I'm thrilled to get it over the line.

"...Argyle is now my second home. I'm attached to this club and am buzzing to be here for another season.

"In the last six years, I've seen massive changes happen, but even little things: we get to see and be around Home Park more, and with the recent announcement of us playing even more games here it shows how much we've grown as a club."

Crawford, a regular in Argyle's midfield, is only one game away from the 100 appearances mark and has been an important part of Head Coach Ryan Perks' line-up since her debut in 2020.

"It's a really proud moment for me," Amy said. "I've been at this club since I was 16 and am proud to sign a contract here.

"I've worked hard for it, and with Argyle being my home club, it makes it a special moment for me. I'm so happy.

Head Coach, Ryan Parks, expressed himself delighted with these signatures: "Both players know the football club extremely well and the path we're on. We're glad they've decided to continue to help us achieve our goals."

The first Fans' Forum of the 2024-25 season took place at Club Argyle, at Home Park Stadium, beginning at 7pm.

The panel consisted of Argyle Chairman Simon Hallett, CEO Andrew Parkinson and Head Coach Wayne Rooney.
