Born in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, the 6ft 3in goalkeeper began his career at nearby Fulham. After an initial youth loan at Liverpool in March 2019, he spent time on loan at several non-league clubs, and also made four appearances for Fulham's under-21 side in the EFL Trophy, across four seasons, all against EFL opposition.
His loan spells included Harrow Borough (11 games) in 2019-20, Stockport County on a short-term loan in 2022, where he was unused, before a more fulfilling spell at Aldershot Town (45 games) in the 2022-23 season.
In July 2023 Luca moved on loan to Crawley Town and made seven appearances before being recalled and loaned to fellow League Two side Notts County for whom he made 11 appearances later that season.
At the start of the 2024-25 season, he made his final loan move from Fulham to Gillingham, making four appearances in all competitions before returning to his parent club in January 2025. Ashby-Hammond departed Fulham upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the 2024-25 season having not made a full senior appearance for the Cottagers.
In late July 2025, he signed on at Home Park as Argyle's 10th summer signing, following the post-relegation departure of Dan Grimshaw to Norwich City and injuries to young reserve Zak Baker but more pivotally Connor Hazard who suffered a knee ligament injury whilst on international duty with Northern Ireland against Denmark in Copenhagen, in June 2025.
Luca himself, had represented England at various youth groups from under-15 to under-20 level receiving 29 caps in total between 2015 and 2020.
Ashby-Hammond had joined Argyle on their pre-season tour to Austria and played as 'Triallist' (though his name was released in local media) surviving a horror debut when he sliced a back-pass he was trying to re-distribute, into his own net, in the 1-0 defeat to Eintracht Braunschweig at the Koasastadion in St. Johann in Tirol. This was the sole game of that tour. Argyle manager Tom Cleverly felt he recovered from that well and had shown enough in training both before and after, and with the risk of Hazard not being fit for the first game of the season, signed the 'keeper on a one-year contract.
Luca's brother, Taye, is also a goalkeeper and they once played against each other when Gillingham and Stevenage met in a 1-1 draw in an EFL Trophy match in November 2024.
