Wiredu, or Sarpong-Wiredu as he is often known, was born in Tower Hamlets in London, of Ghanaian descent, and arrived at Home Park having played as a midfielder, wing-back and a full-back.
He started his career as a youth with Charlton Athletic making his debut in an EFL Trophy defeat to Milton Keynes Dons in August 2018. In May 2019, his contract was extended until 2021
In February 2019, he joined ambitious National League side Bromley on loan until the end of the season. He made a total of 11 appearances for the club without scoring. He was then later loaned out again, to League Two Colchester United until January 2020 (11 & 0).
Having initially returned to Charlton, he was then allowed to leave just as the January transfer window closed, to return to Colchester United on a permanent basis. In total he had made six appearances for Charlton in various cup competitions but had missed out on a league appearance for them.
On his return to Essex he scored his first professional goal in their 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers in March 2021 and in July 2021 signed a two-year contract extension. He added a further 65 appearances, scoring twice, across two League Two seasons.
In June 2022, Wiredu then moved north and up a division to join League One Fleetwood Town on a three-year deal. He spent two seasons with the club in League One before they returned to League Two and was also made captain of the side, playing 123 times and scoring seven for the Cod Army.
Following Argyle's own relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2024-25 season and the mass exodus that followed, Wiredu was signed by new Argyle manager Tom Cleverley as the club's seventh summer signing at the start of June 2025. Argyle reportedly beat other League One and Championship teams to Wiredu's signature and whilst the fee was undisclosed, they paid a rumoured £300,000 and signed their new arrival on a three-year deal ahead of the club's return to League One.
