Born in Aberdeen in 2000, Mackenzie joined the club’s youth system at the age of nine, progressing through the ranks to captain the club’s development side. He signed a two-year contract in 2019 and in October 2020 joined Forfar Athletic on loan, where he made 14 appearances in all competitions.
Upon returning to his parent club, he made his debut for the Dons in March 2021 in a 1-0 defeat at Dundee United, going on to make a further five appearances during the remainder of the season. Mackenzie signed a two-year contract following his debut and in October 2024, he received his first international call-up to the Scottish national squad for Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Portugal without featuring for the first team.
During his time at Pittodrie, he went on to make 124 appearances scoring three goals. He appeared as a substitute in Aberdeen’s 2025 Scottish Cup Final victory over Celtic, who they beat 4-3 on penalties at Hampden Park. He was released by his home town club at the end of the 2024-25 campaign and the versatile left-back signed for Argyle shortly after his release.
