Born in Coventry in 1991, Paterson's footballing journey began at the Manchester United academy before moving to Walsall in 2010, where he made his senior debut in a 2-1 defeat to Chesterfield in the Football League Trophy. His league bow followed four days later at home to Colchester United, while his first goal for the Saddlers arrived in a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town in November 2011. During his time at the Bescot Stadium, he made 102 appearances in all competitions scoring 16 goals.
In July 2013, he signed for Championship side, Nottingham Forest, where his first competitive goals for his new team came in the FA Cup third round against West Ham United, a game that saw him bag his first career hat-trick. The majority of his 15 goals for Forest came during that first season and limited opportunities the following year saw Paterson join Huddersfield Town on a season-long loan for the 2015-16 campaign. He made 36 appearances for the Terriers finding the net eight times.
A move to Ashton Gate in August 2016 saw him sign a three-year deal with Bristol City. He scored his first goal for the Robins in a 2-1 win over former club, Nottingham Forest. He also featured during City's run to the EFL Cup semi-finals in 2017-18, where they lost 5-3 on aggregate to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. A loan move to Derby County saw him score once in a dozen matches before his parent club recalled him after four months at Pride Park.
After leaving Bristol City at the end of the 2020-21 season with 26 goals in 157 appearances to his name, he had a brief trial at Middlesbrough before signing for Swansea City. Paterson's first goal for the Swans came on debut against Blackburn Rovers and he would go on to play 109 games for the Welsh side, scoring 17 goals in the process. A move to the United States came about in 2024 when he signed for MLS side Charlotte FC, but he was limited to just four appearances from the bench. A return to England followed as he signed a short-term deal with hometown club, Coventry City, where he made eight substitute appearances, finding the net once with a memorable late winner against Portsmouth. His final appearance for the Sky Blues came at Home Park against Argyle and following his release from Coventry, he put pen to paper with the Pilgrims in May 2025.
