Tony was my PE teacher at Plymstock School in 1967-8. He combined teaching with part-time appearances for Argyle. He was an extremely popular teacher with the boys of that school. I remember one particular five-a-side kick-around in the sports hall where Tony kindly broke my big toe-nail after a crunching tackle that was his trade mark of the time.
I later crossed paths with Tony at St Luke's College in Exeter (1975) when he was attending seminars there whilst I was in teacher training. He always had time to stop for a quick chat.
Good all round chap.

Like many Norwegians, I have a huge interest in - and affection for - British football. I have done some research into British players' careers in South Africa during the 1960s and 70s.
As far as Tony Brimacombe's concerned, he seemed to have been an ever-present in his three seasons for Cape Town City. Although there's some data missing, the following estimated league stats are fairly close to the mark:
1970 - 28 apps, 1 goal
1971 - 27 apps (including a game v Bloemfontein City, who later withdrew from the league)

Tony Brimacombe was my English teacher at Plymstock Comprehensive School in about 1967. He was a wonderful teacher and took an interest in everyone in his class. I saw him play at Home Park a few times and he spotted me in the crowd once and gave me a nod and a smile. He also got the autographs for me from the entire Argyle team. I am sure I was not the only one in the school hall fighting back a tear when he gave his farewell speech as he left to further his career.

Before teaching at Plymstock School, where he was immensely popular, Tony taught at Pomphlett Primary School in Plymstock. He was really proud when he moved to the senior school (in the same year that I did) 1967.
At Pomphlett when he first started playing for The Greens, The Herald newspaper visited the school and photographed him kicking a tennis ball with some of the primary school football team. As I was one of those involved the picture, cut from The Herald, was a favourite memory of a great teacher and a really nice person.

A E (Tony) Brimacombe came to Simon Langton Grammar School, Canterbury, in September 1963. It was his first teaching post since graduating from Loughborough. At the time he was playing for Kettering Town, but he soon transferred to Barnet, at the time one of the best amateur teams.
Tony transformed PE at the school. The headmaster, C H Rieu, was very supportive in encouraging Tony to develop team sports, particularly football.
When Tony was still at Kettering he used to complain every Monday morning about the useless centre-forward they had. Tony, a ball playing inside-forward ... More

So sad to hear Tony has passed away. He was head of sport at Kevics in Totnes when I was at school during the 70s. A great man who always put the pupils before himself. A true inspiration to us all. RIP Tony.
From Mike Odgers in Camborne on 26/08/2018 ...
It was sad to hear the passing of Tony Brimacombe in today's Independent. Condolences to his family and close friends from Falmouth Town FC.
Tony played for Falmouth Town in the SWL for the latter part of 1971-72 season. He made 16 appearances and scored 2 goals for 'The Town'. His manager at the time was Plymouth born Richard Gray (ex Argyle).
I have no record of where Tony next moved on to.
