Smith was an attacking right-sided midfielder from Saltash, who graduated from Argyle's Centre of Excellence. He managed just two Football League appearances for Argyle, both from the bench, and also had spells on loan at Morecambe, where he made a further two League appearances in September 2008, and Conference National side Eastbourne Borough, where he was loaned two months later along with Ashley Barnes. He returned to Home Park in February 2009, having played 13 times for Eastbourne, but was released by Paul Sturrock when his contract expired at the end of the season, which allowed him to rejoin Eastbourne and make a further 15 appearances in 2009-10.
Smith then gravitated back towards the South West, signing first for struggling Conference South side Weymouth in February 2010 and then Truro City five months later, for whom he played in their Southern League winning season. Following a short spell with Bath City, Smith joined Tiverton Town in August 2012 and was named Tivvy’s Player of the Season as the Devon club reached the play-offs of the Southern League Division One (South & West). At the start of the 2014-15 season, Smith signed a one-year deal with Dorchester Town.
