Flame-haired Peter Whiston was a Widnes-born central defender who came through the youth ranks at Home Park. Making his League debut in the penultimate game of the 1988-89 season, Whiston found it hard to establish himself in the first team. After a handful of appearances across two seasons, he moved up the A38, initially on loan, to sign for Torquay United, reuniting with Dave Smith. Permanently signed on a free transfer, a three year spell produced 40 appearances and a debut League goal for the Plainmoor outfit, although injury ruled him out of their 1991 Play-off Final win over Blackpool.
The following season, Exeter City paid £25,000 to take him to St James Park in a deal that saw Darran Rowbotham move to Plainmoor, a move that gave both players the distinction of playing League football for all three Devon clubs. Three years in red and white saw Whiston play 85 times and score 7 before former City manager Alan Ball paid £30,000 to reward Whiston's consistency with a surprise move to the then Premiership side Southampton. A solitary top-flight game as a substitute for the Saints was all that resulted and Whiston soon moved to Shrewsbury Town, initially on loan, reuniting with Kevin Summerfield and Malcolm Musgrove. Making the move permanent, a two year spell at Gay Meadow produced his only career brace when he netted twice in The Shrews' remarkable 11-2 mauling of Marine in 1996 FA Cup 1st Round.
Whiston did finally make up for his Wembley heartache with Torquay when he appeared for The Shrews in the 1996 Football League Trophy Final, which they lost 2-1 to Rotherham. His last season in League football was 1996-97, in which he was beset by a worsening knee injury, which was impacting his performance and needing regular pre-match injections. He started that campaign with an opening day red card at home to Wycombe, repeating the feat against the same opponents in the away return game some months later. He then completed the rare feat of being sent off on the opening and closing day of a season, making it a hat-trick of reds for the season, when he was dismissed in The Shrews' 2-0 defeat at Gillingham in what turned out to be his last football league game. Largely due to the persistent knee problem, he then retired from the professional game and briefly played on in non-league football for Stafford Rangers before returning to his native Widnes.
