Born in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, Walker started out with his local side, Rutherglen Waverley. He came to Plymouth in 1925, staying at Home Park for four seasons and mainly playing as a fill-in for Jack Leslie at inside-left, although he'd try his hand as a wing-half too. After having to wait until the January of his last season – 1925-26 – for his first appearance of that campaign, he decided to try his luck elsewhere and moved to Exeter City. He made 12 appearances for the Grecians before leaving St James Park in 1927 to register with Wigan Borough, his last League club.
