Born in Singapore, where his father worked in the prison service, Twissell moved to Britain when he was seven and later joined the Royal Navy. He became a regular in their representative side and towards the end of his service joined Argyle as an amateur, playing when he could get leave. He was also spotted by the England Amateur selectors, won several caps and represented Great Britain at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. After this, Twissell turned professional at Home Park and, although he was never a first team regular, is remembered for his speed on the left wing. In 1958, he signed for York City, where he played until his retirement three years later.
