Originally from Walkden, between Manchester and Salford, Tootill started his career with non-league Chorley before moving to Argyle in 1936. In 1938 he left Home Park for Sheffield United, where he made just a dozen appearances before his career was interrupted by the Second World War. The conflict cost him his best footballing years, but he did briefly resume his career in 1947 when he made 18 appearances for Hartlepools United.
