A former England schoolboy and youth international, Sykes began his career with hometown club Bristol Rovers, having been spotted playing for a local boys club. He played over 200 games at half-back for Rovers, before moving to Argyle in 1964. A persistent knee injury and arthritis meant he was restricted to just four appearances in his single season at Home Park and he moved on to Stockport County within 12 months of arriving. He made more than 50 appearances over the next 18 months before ending his professional career with a brief spell at Doncaster Rovers. He also went on to play for Altrincham.
