HARRY BLAND
Full Name: William Henry Bland
Born: 12 January 1898
Came from: Royal Navy Went to: Cardiff City
First game: 10 December 1927 Last game: 31 March 1934
Appearances: 128 (128/0) Goals: 3
A posting by the Royal Navy brought the Leeds-born right-back to Plymouth and he soon attracted the attention of Argyle manager Bob Jack. Whilst also playing for the Navy, Bland impressed in two games for Argyle Reserves in October 1927, and he signed a professional contract when he completed his time in the Navy at the end of the year. He was one of two players to join the club from the senior service that season; Alec Edmunds had signed in the summer, but of the two able seamen, Bland was to fare better for the Pilgrims.
With age catching up on legendary defender Moses Russell, Bland stepped in to fill the void, even though he was making his Football League debut a month short of his 30th birthday. And what a debut too; he scored in a 3-2 home win against Millwall in December 1927.
A very hard tackler and tough competitor, Bland was a member of the team that won promotion to the Second Division in the 1929-30 season. He left Home Park in 1934 after 128 appearances for the club, to play eight times for Cardiff City. However, the Bluebirds suffered several heavy defeats in a disappointing season and Bland was one of many players released in a bid to improve the club's fortunes.
Harry Bland died in Bristol in July 1960, at the age of 62.
