Shearing started his career at non-league Hendon, joining West Ham United in 1960. He could not break into the Hammers first team and moved on to Portsmouth, where he spent four years but made only 17 appearances. After an impressive two-year stint at Exeter City, he signed for Argyle in June 1966 and soon displaced John Leiper between the sticks. However, he in turn lost his place to Pat Dunne and returned to Exeter City two years later. After another three seasons at St James Park he moved on to Bristol Rovers before ending his career with Gillingham, with whom he also moved into coaching.
