Although the Second World War was at an end, the Football League divided its competition into regional sections for the 1945-46 season because of the exceptional conditions at that time, with so many players still serving in the Armed Forces or employed on essential war work. Argyle played in the Football League South that season, against first-class opposition such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Aston Villa and Wolves. It proved impossible for the Pilgrims to field a regular side; 72 players made an appearance and performances inevitably suffered. From week to week the club called on Armed Services players who were stationed in the area, guest players from other League clubs and local amateurs to supplement its registered playing staff.
Scrine was one of 27 in the guest category. Whilst he went on to become a twice-capped Welsh international inside-forward, Scrine was just a promising young amateur, yet to make his first team debut for Swansea Town, when he guested for Argyle. After the war ended he signed professional terms for the Swans in 1947 and went on to feature in their Third Division (South) championship winning side of 1948-49 and appeared in two Welsh Cup Finals, including Swansea's 1950 victory. His two Welsh caps came in the British Championship against England at Ninian Park (a 1-4 defeat) and then Northern Ireland at the Racecourse Ground (a 0-0 draw). In his time with Swansea he scored 45 goals in 142 appearances before moving to Oldham Athletic in October 1953. In a two-year stay at Boundary Park he played 78 times and scored 21 goals. He was later with Llanelli, Ammanford, Milford United, Haverfordwest and Bettws in the Welsh leagues before retiring from the game.
