David Kemp's reign as Argyle manager in the early 1990s is best remembered for its agricultural style of football and bargain-busting transfer policy. Striker Morrys Scott epitomised both elements perhaps more than any other player.
The Swansea-born target-man had spent time with Cardiff (nine games), Colchester and Southend (no appearances for either) before turning up at Home Park in the summer of 1991. Having failed to score for any of them, it felt an act of desperate barrel-scraping when Kemp snapped the then 20-year-old up on a free transfer in the absence of any better alternatives for the 'price'. Scott played in eight league and cup games for Argyle in 1991-92 without scoring, and was shown the door by Peter Shilton following relegation at the end of the season. He joined Northampton Town on a non-contract basis and played 17 times, scoring the only two goals of his brief Football League career, before having a brief spell with Slough Town. He then returned to Wales to play semi-professional football in the Welsh Premier League.
He initially signed for Barry Town for the 1994-95 season. Despite playing just three times for Town in the league, he did play in both legs of a 7-0 aggregate defeat to Lithuanian side Žalgiris Vilnius in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He then went on to play for Afan Lido, Briton Ferry Athletic, Inter Cabletel (formerly Inter Cardiff before then becoming Cardiff Metropolitan University FC), Rhayader Town, Afan Lido (again) and Haverfordwest County, before returning to Afan Lido for a third time.
In total Scott scored 11 goals in 102 appearances (of which 35 were from the bench) in the Welsh Premier, for six different clubs. After his playing career was over he had a spell of coaching with Cwm Wanderers of the Neath & District League before returning to his most-favoured club, Afan Lido, to become assistant-manager at the Marston's Stadium.
