Born in Falkirk, Ross started his career in Scotland with Camelon Juniors, Falkirk and Stenhousemuir. Moving to Argyle in 1923, he made just two appearances at centre-half, both in wins for the club, straddling February and March 1924. His stay at Home Park was short lived and he moved to Coventry City where he made 20 appearances. He then gravitated back to his homeland without quite making it, having spells with Workington, Carlisle United, Wrexham, Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, Boston Town and Hyde United.
