TONY BIRD
Came from: Bray Unknowns Went to: Newport County
First game: 01 November 1930 Last game: 10 February 1934
Appearances: 27 (27/0) Goals: 7
Born in Dublin, the powerfully-built forward began his career in his homeland with non-league Richmond United and then with League of Ireland sides Dundalk and Bray Unknowns before being given his chance in the English Football League with Argyle. Bird's debut, however, was a match to forget: a 7-1 drubbing at Bradford Park Avenue in November 1930. He went on to to figure in only a handful of games in each of his four seasons, playing second fiddle to the likes of Jack Vidler, Ray Bowden and Jack Leslie, but once managed six goals for the reserves in a Southern League match. He left Home Park in 1934, signing for Newport County where he scored 15 goals in 29 games, and then he moved on to Tranmere Rovers and Boston United before returning to Ireland with Dublin-based non-league sides Fearon Athletic and then Brideville.
