Searching for a young deputy following his arrival at the club as player-manager, Peter Shilton snapped up St Helens Town keeper Ray Newland in the summer of 1992. Released by Everton the year before, it was Toffees goalkeeping legend Neville Southall who recommended him to Shilton.
Signed as back-up to the England legend, Newland actually made 23 league and cup appearances in his debut season at the club, though his form between the posts was patchy at best and Shilton brought another young keeper – Alan Nicholls – to the club the following summer. Nicholls soon established himself in the Pilgrims' goal, and Newland's future at the club looked bleak. Indeed, after signing veteran Martin Hodge as cover for Nicholls in 1994, Shilton decided to release the young Scouser.
Newland signed for Chester City, but made just 10 appearances for them before spending one season at Torquay and then turning out for a succession of non-league clubs. He retired from football in 2001, and went on to establish himself as a successful goalkeeping coach for a private company, Just 4 Keepers.
