Nelson began his career with West Ham United and spent nearly six years with the club, playing for the first team only occasionally. He moved to Ipswich Town in 1959 and over the next five years made almost 200 appearances for them at centre-half, helping the club win the Second Division in 1961 and the League Championship the following season. He joined Leyton Orient in 1964 and spent two seasons there before moving to Home Park. A reliable performer in his time with Argyle, he retired at the end of his third season with the club and moved into coaching with Millwall. He went on to manage Gillingham and Charlton Athletic.
