Major was born in Yeovil, in Somerset but grew up in Leicestershire, and as a young goalkeeper was spotted by Leicester City whilst playing schoolboy football for Loughborough-based side Brush Sports. The club was dissolved in 1960 and eventually replaced by Loughborough United.
He then spent two years at Filbert Street, playing only occasionally due to the amount of competition at the club for the goalkeeper's jersey. In total he played 26 times for the Foxes, between 1947 and 1949.
He then moved to Argyle on a free transfer, ostensibly as back-up to Bill Shortt and spent seven years with the club but played a relatively small number of games, largely due to being a second-choice stopper for most of his stay. He did however make 23 appearances in his first four seasons with the club, including two in the 1951-52 Third Division (South) championship-winning season.
Following Shortt's retirement, it appeared that Major would then become the first-choice 'keeper at Home Park, but cruelly, an injury forced him to leave the game at almost the same time. A previous knock had turned into a persistent thigh injury which impacted his agility and kicking, and failing to respond to treatment, meant he was advised to retire from the professional game. He had played 101 games in total over a nine-year career.
Returning to Leicestershire he became steward of the Newbold Verdon Working Men's Club (WMC), in the Leicestershire village about four miles from Market Bosworth. He remained living and working in the East Midlands area and passed away in December 2001, aged 75 years old.
