Lowndes spent just over two years at Argyle, having joined the club on a free transfer from Livingston. He began his career with Leeds United but did not make an appearance for the club, moving on to Watford. His first team chances were limited there also and he played just 7 times in three years before moving to Scotland with St Johnstone, managed at the time by Paul Sturrock. He helped them qualify for the UEFA Cup and reach the League Cup Final and was the team’s top scorer in his second season with the club. At the end of his contract he signed for Livingston, spending just a year there, with a short loan spell at Rotherham United, before his move to Home Park. During his time at Argyle, Lowndes was a regular part of the first team squad but more often than not he appeared as a substitute or as a wide midfielder instead of his preferred position up front. After being released by Argyle he joined Port Vale, playing over 60 games in two and a half seasons, before spending a season at Chester City, where he again teamed up with former Argyle manager Bobby Williamson.
