Law was born in Greenwich and served his apprenticeship with Arsenal between 1979-81 before being released and signing for Barnsley. A four year spell at Oakwell was followed by two years at Blackpool, which included an appearance at Home Park for the Tangerines in their 3-1 defeat by Dave Smith's promotion-chasing side in April 1986. Moving to Home Park in March 1987, the strong, no-nonsense central defender played 43 times spread across two seasons, scoring five times.
During the close season of 1988, he returned north to sign for Notts County for two years, which included a loan spell at Scarborough. He then clocked up a century of appearances for both Rotherham and Chesterfield, captaining the latter to their 1995 League Two Play-off win over Bury at Wembley Stadium. He ended his playing career with Hereford United in the 1996-97 season. Law later managed Chesterfield, Bradford City and Grimsby as well as producing two sons, Josh and Nicky, both of whom played in the Football League.
