John spent five years at Home Park after joining the club as a 17-year-old in 1952. Unable to keep a place in the first team, he moved on to his hometown club, Swansea Town, but after a handful of appearances during his only season at the Vetch Field, joined Scunthorpe United. It was here that he made his mark, playing regularly at full-back over the next three years. His form led to a move to Millwall in 1962, where he spent an equally successful five seasons. He also went on to play for Highlands Park in South Africa.
