Although the Second World War was at an end, the Football League divided its competition into regional sections for the 1945-46 season because of the exceptional conditions at that time, with so many players still serving in the Armed Forces or employed on essential war work. Argyle played in the Football League South that season, against first-class opposition such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Aston Villa and Wolves. It proved impossible for the Pilgrims to field a regular side; 72 players made an appearance and performances inevitably suffered. From week to week the club called on Armed Services players, guest footballers from other League clubs and local amateurs to supplement its registered playing staff.
Jenkins was one of 21 players whose only first team games for Argyle were in the Football League South season and who usually played in local football or for the Armed Forces. He was named as one of the club's new professionals at the start of the 1945-46 season, although was also serving as an artificer in the Royal Navy at that time. The year before he was an Astor Institute player in the Plymouth & District (P&D) League, but signed for Argyle as an amateur on 30th April 1945 and then agreed professional terms on 17th May, which allowed him to play in League West Cup matches against Lovell's Athletic and Bristol City in May 1945, and in friendly versus Cardiff City that same month. He had to wait almost a year for his debut and solitary appearance in a recognised first team competition: a heavy defeat at Millwall in April 1946, after which the Western Independent reported: "Jenkins - deputising for Dixon, injured at Chelsea - did not do too well at left-back in his first League match against the speed of Johnson and Jinks." Having helped Argyle complete this difficult transitionary campaign, the club released him from his contract.
