Plymouth-born Barnes joined Argyle from Bideford Town, but the inside-left found his first team chances limited at Home Park. In two seasons with the club he had only two short spells in the side, despite once scoring two goals in an FA Cup tie against Watford. After leaving Argyle he played for Weymouth Town and Barnstaple Town.

Like Peter Dyer, Bernard Barnes played for Crownhill School, and with Dyer, Tommy Worth and Gordon Moxham, played for Plymouth and Devon Schoolboys in the 1952/53 season.
