Hopkins began his career as an apprentice with Fulham and went on to make over 200 appearances during eight years with the London club. A central defender, he also represented Wales at youth, under-21 and full international levels. Moving on to Crystal Palace in 1988, he spent four years at Selhurst Park, including a short loan spell with Argyle in 1991. After a brief period with Bristol Rovers following his release, he ended his professional career with five fairly successful years at Reading. He went on to play for Selangor in Malaysia and Gippsland Falcons in Australia.
