Forbes was a midfielder with Woking when he was spotted by Exeter City in 1977 and given a chance of League football. Moving to St James Park, he played 59 times during a four year stay, scoring five times before moving into non-league football with Bideford Town. His brief League career appeared primed for resurrection after a two year hiatus in North Devon when he moved to Home Park in 1983. A Football League Cup game was sandwiched between two league starts in September 1983, and he returned briefly to the side for a home match in November. His final game was the FA Cup replay with Newport County at Somerton Park in January 1984, near the start of the ‘road to Villa Park'. Those three league and two cup appearances proved to be his total in Green and he returned to non-league football with Bideford.
