Fleming began his career as a trainee with Coventry City and made a few first team appearances before brief spells with Northampton Town and Preston North End. He then moved to Lincoln City and made his name there in the centre of midfield, playing over 200 games for the club before moving on to Argyle. Despite playing regularly after arriving at Home Park, he fell out of favour soon after the arrival of Paul Sturrock and moved to Cambridge United. After four successful seasons there he moved to Grimsby Town and then Kidderminster Harriers. He also went on to play non-league football for Moor Green, Grantham Town and Lincoln United.
