A goalkeeper with local league side Oak Villa, Dyer was signed by Argyle and made his debut as an 18-year-old in 1955, in an attempt to fill the void caused by the retirement of Bill Shortt and Les Major. He was on the small side for a first team 'keeper and after two years of struggling to establish himself in the team, moved back into non-league football with Ilfracombe Town.

From Bill Chislett in Bath on 29/12/2015 ...
Peter Dyer played for Crownhill School along with Bernard Barnes, Tom Worth and Gordon Moxham. All four played for Plymouth & Devon Schoolboys in the 1952-53 season. All four were on Argyle's books as youths. On completion of National Service, Peter Dyer, I believe, played for Weymouth.
