JOHN DEVINE
Note: Devine's total number of goals scored is one less than in some publications. That's because of the match at QPR on 15 Mar 1923. Some books show the goalscorers as Fowler and Devine (2) but the following day's Western Morning News clearly describes the first goal as scored by Batten, and Devine scoring just one.
Born: 11 June 1899
Came from: Kilsyth Rangers Went to: East Stirlingshire
First game: 31 December 1921 Last game: 05 May 1923
Appearances: 14 (14/0) Goals: 2
The Kirkintilloch-born left back arrived at Home Park from Kilsyth Rangers in Scotland in readiness for Argyle's second season of League football. Just three appearances followed in his debut season, although a more respectable eleven came in the next, together with two goals – away at Merthyr and Queens Park Rangers.
Finding a regular berth hard to come by, Devine returned north of the border to join East Stirlingshire (with some evidence that he might have made a brief stop at Exeter City on the way). Whilst appearance details are incomplete, records show a peripatetic association with a variety of clubs thereafter including Kettering Town, Charlton Athletic, Dundee, Southport and Crewe Alexandra before winding down closer to home, back at Kilsyth Juniors and ultimately Croy Celtic.
