SIMON DAWE
Born: 16 March 1977
Came from: Trainee Went to: Released
First game: 10 December 1994 Last game: 26 September 1995
Appearances: 5 (3/2) Goals: 0
Born in Plymouth, and a defender, he attended Eggbuckland Community College, and made his way up through the youth ranks at Argyle. However, Dawe's professional career was over almost as quickly as it had begun.
Called upon to plug the gaps caused by an horrendous injury crisis in what-was-to-be the relegation season of 1994-95, he was thrust straight into a situation he was not prepared for, by Peter Shilton, and the experience was quite possibly enough to mentally scar the 17-year-old for life.
A commendable display in a 3-0 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion was followed up by further starts in the eye-watering 7-0 thrashing at Brentford's Griffin Park in December 1994, as Shilton's tenure waned. This was followed by a 3-0 Boxing Day defeat at Swansea City. Three league appearances in 16 days and 13 goals were conceded.
Dawe went on to make just two further appearances for the club after that baptism of fire, and at least finished his league career with a 0-0 draw away at AFC Bournemouth under caretaker-manager Steve McCall in January 1995. An appearance in the Football League Trophy followed in September 1995, when as part of an early Neil Warnock side, normal service was resumed in a 0-3 defeat at home to Peterborough United. This was Dawe's final game for the club before being released.
In just five appearances for the club he achieved not only the feat of not being on a winning side and playing under three different managers, but more remarkably still, had not played in an Argyle side that had scored!
After spending some time with Barnstaple Town, he moved out of the game and in 1997, started work locally, for specialist jewellers insurers TH March in their Plymouth office. He subsequently qualified as an ACII (Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute) and by 2022 was reached the level of Managing Director, within their Birmingham office and was based in Bromsgrove.
