The nephew of former England midfielder Tony, Darren Currie joined Argyle on transfer deadline day in March 1998 after being released by Shrewsbury Town. His luxurious talents had seen him fall out of favour at the Shropshire club, and Mick Jones quickly pounced to take him to Home Park for the remainder of the 1997-98 season.
However, Argyle were deep in relegation trouble at the time, and the blood and guts football required to stave off the drop were hardly an ideal platform for Currie to showcase his undoubted talents. Despite becoming a regular in the side, he failed to find the net and created just one goal for his team-mates - that coming in a 1-1 draw at Millwall. In all, Currie made seven appearances for Argyle, four of which ended in defeat, and he went down with the good ship Mayflower following an infamous defeat at Burnley.
Argyle had the chance to sign Currie permanently that summer, but declined and he joined Barnet instead to great success. After two seasons at Underhill, in which he twice featured in the PFA Team of the Year, he joined Wycombe Wanderers for £200,000 and later turned out for Brighton, Ipswich, Coventry, Derby, Luton, Chesterfield, Dagenham, Boreham Wood and Hendon.
In October 2012, Currie rejoined Dagenham as a development coach. He was promoted to assistant-manager in February 2013, replacing another former Pilgrim, Wayne Burnett who was promoted to manager following the departure of John Still to Luton Town. In December 2015, Currie became a co-caretaker manager (with Warren Hackett) after Burnett was sacked. However, after two games in charge, Currie returned to his role as assistant-manager, following the return of John Still to the club.
In June 2018, Currie returned to another of his former clubs, Barnet, as assistant-manager, once again as assistant to John Still. Following Still's retirement in December 2018, Currie then took over as caretaker-manager of the Bees. This included leading the Bees to a famous FA Cup 3rd Round win, away at Championship-side Sheffield United in January 2019. a win despite a difference of 84 places in the football pyramid.
