Midfielder Collins served his apprenticeship at Home Park before signing professional terms. Making his league debut at The Valley on 30th January 1980, he made two further appearances that season. Chances were harder to come by the following season and with just a further league appearance and a single Football League Group Cup game to his name by the end of August 1981, he moved into non-league football with Falmouth Town. His professional career looked to have been resurrected when he moved to Torquay United from Falmouth in the 1983-84 season but he played just six times for The Gulls before returning to Cornwall to sign for Saltash United.
