Leeds-born Spencer was recruited by nearby Huddersfield Town at the age of seven, and progressed through the whole of the club's youth system in a decade to make his debut for the first team in 2012.

Following his first move away from the Terriers in a brief spell at Northwich Victoria, Spencer had a pair of season-long loan deals at League 2 level - firstly with Morecambe in 2010-11, averaging a goal every four games, followed by ten goals in 41 appearances for Cheltenham Town in 2011-12.

Those loan moves earned him opportunities in Huddersfield's senior squad at the beginning of the following season, when he played in both league and cup competitions and signed a one-year contract extension before testing himself at League 1 level with loans at Brentford and Crawley, the latter spell cut short through injury.

A half-season loan move to Scunthorpe United preceded a mutual decision in January 2014 for his contract with Huddersfield to be terminated, so ending a 12-year association with the club. The move allowed him to sign for Notts County, initially until the end of the season but then a two-year extension followed. He played 32 times and scored six goals whilst at Meadow Lane, although he missed most of his first full season there because of cruciate ligament damage incurred in a pre-season game.

With six months remaining on his contract, Spencer's time with County ended in January 2016 by mutual consent. A day later he joined Cambridge United on a six-month deal and that same afternoon came on as a substitute for the U's and scored with his first touch of the ball. He also scored in his final game for Cambridge, at the end of that April, coming off the bench to net in a 2-2 draw against Argyle.

Spencer became the summer of 2016's ninth new face at Home Park when manager Derek Adams signed the 24-year-old to bolster Argyle's attacking options.

Starting the season well, he won acclaim with some intelligent performances in the front line, most notably in the 2-1 away win at Crewe in November 2016. Just days later, his progress was cut short by a training ground accident, in which he broke and dislocated his ankle.

His return from injury in mid-February 2017 coincided with success on the pitch, and more often than not, Spencer found himself limited to bench appearances. His last goal for Argyle was indeed as a substitute, in the last match of the season at Grimsby when his equaliser left Argyle a whisker away from the League Two title.

A few days later, Argyle's retained list was issued and Spencer was released, but he was soon snapped up by Mansfield Town to remain in League Two.

He scored four times in 25 appearances for Mansfield but was released at the end of the 2017-18 season. In August 2018 he dropped into non-league football to join Northern Premier League Premier Division club Farsley Celtic, where he was voted the Northern Premier League Player of the Year after his first campaign and was retained for the following season in a dual player-ambassador role.

Spending five years with the Leeds-based club, he played 108 times and scored 48 goals before moving to Manchester-based National League North rivals Curzon Ashton in February 2023.
