Born is Glasgow, Miller began his career at Livingston, where he made his senior debut in October 2005 as an 18-year-old substitute for one Derek Adams, the beginning of a long association for the two men.
Miller began the following campaign on a half-season loan at Ayr United, where he scored his first senior goal in 18 games there, and then linked up with Derek Adams again when he was loaned to Ross County in the 2007-08 season, helping the Staggies win the Scottish Second Division. The future Argyle manager signed Miller for County on a permanent deal in July 2009 and the pair enjoyed three successful years together, winning promotion to the Scottish Premier League, the Challenge Cup and a place in the Scottish FA Cup final.
Valued for his surging runs and committed tackling, Miller made the right-back slot his own, but after 119 games over three seasons, much to the disappointment of their fans, he turned down an offer to remain at Ross County for their first SPL campaign. Instead he moved to St Johnstone in May 2012 to help the Perth side win the first major trophy in their 130-year history after a 2-0 Scottish FA Cup win over Dundee United, in which former Pilgrim Steve MacLean scored.
After three years at McDiarmid Park (77 appearances at right-back and centre-back, include eight in the Europa League), Miller moved back to his native Glasgow to join Partick Thistle, for whom he played 24 times in the 2015-16 season. In June 2016 the 29-year-old made the long journey south for his first taste of English football when Derek Adams came knocking again, the manager's fourth signing that summer.
Miller made 56 appearances across two seasons at Home Park, and was part of Argyle's promotion-winning 2016-17 campaign. However, he found chances harder to come by in his second season and was released in May 2018. A month later he moved closer to his homeland when he agreed a one-year deal at League Two Carlisle United, where he made 22 appearances and scored once in the 2018-19 League Two season.
Release by Carlisle, he returned to Scotland to sign for Falkirk, making 80 appearances over the following three seasons, and also took his first steps into coaching by taking the role of development squad coach, whilst studying for and obtaining the prestigious UEFA 'A' coaching licence.
His last playing role was a move to ambitious Lowland League side East Kilbride, whilst still coaching at Falkirk. After East Kilbride, he became manager of Strathclyde University Men's Football Club before becoming academy coach for Partick Thistle’s under-18s. In 2023 he had a spell as player/coach at St Cadocs Youth Club, in the West of Scotland League Premier Division, and in June 2024 he was appointed as head of youth at Scottish League One side Alloa Athletic.
