Ugwu, full name Chigozie Eze Ugwu but known as 'Gozie', was born in Oxford and began his career with Reading in 2007. He progressed through the Royals' academy system to the under-18 side and reserves, and despite an injury-disrupted 2010-11 campaign, signed his first professional contract in June 2011. In January 2012 he moved to non-league Ebbsfleet United on loan, having seen a possible move to Home Park fall through. After four goals in ten appearances for Ebbsfleet, he returned to the Madejski Stadium and agreed a two-year deal with Reading in July 2012, joining Yeovil Town in a six-month loan deal on the same day.
A tall, speedy and hard-working striker, he scored three times in five starts and thirteen substitute appearances whilst at Huish Park. After returning to Reading at the end of his loan spell, Ugwu signed for Argyle on a loan deal in January 2013 but failed to score in six appearances with just two starts. He was recalled by the Royals in March after an injury-riddled spell at Home Park.
Another loan spell ensued at Shrewsbury Town in November 2013 with a solitary goal in seven appearances. He continued to impress in Reading's under-21 side but a full breakthrough eluded him and ultimately the striker never made a first team appearance for the Royals. Accordingly, he was released in the summer of 2014 and had trials with his hometown club Oxford United and Dagenham & Redbridge, before trying his luck up in Scotland with Dunfermline Athletic. Following seven goals in 14 league appearances for the Scottish League One side, Ugwu - still only 21 - teamed up once again with Gary Johnson at Yeovil Town in January 2015. He went on to score five times in 22 games for the Glovers - enough to finish as the club's joint-top scorer - but was released at the end of the season, following the club's relegation to League Two.
In September 2015 Ugwu signed a one year deal with Wycombe Wanderers, scoring - as the Law of the Returning Striker dictates - in Wanderers' acrimonious 0-1 win at Home Park in January 2016.
Following his spell with the Chairboys, he had a nomadic career, initially playing for Woking (2016–2017) and then Chesterfield (2017–2019), which included loan spells at Boreham Wood (2018-19) and Ebbsfleet United (2019). For the 2019–2020 season he moved to Ebbsfleet United permanently, and then returned to Scotland to play for Raith Rovers (2020–2021) and Greenock Morton (2021–2022).
Ugwu's career then took an international twist when he moved to Saudi Arabia, playing for First Division (second tier) Jeddah Club (2022–2023) before moving to Second Division (third tier) Al-Entesar in 2023.
