Came from: Royal Navy Went to: York City
First game: 15 October 1955 Last game: 21 September 1957

Born in Singapore, where his father worked in the prison service, Twissell moved to Britain at the age of seven. He later joined the Royal Navy, becoming a radar technician and playing regularly for its representative football team.
Towards the end of his National Service, having established himself in the Naval side, he joined Argyle as an amateur in April 1955 under Jack Rowley, playing whenever he could obtain leave.
Twissell also attracted the attention of England’s amateur selectors, winning five caps in 1956 after England finished joint-winners of the 1955-56 British Amateur Championship. He also made 11 appearances for the Great Britain Olympic team in 1956, scoring twice. Both goals came in Great Britain’s 9-0 victory over Thailand at Melbourne’s Olympic Park Stadium, during the 1956 Olympics.
After the Games, he returned to England and turned professional with Argyle in April 1957. Although never a regular in the first team, he was remembered for his speed on the left wing. Across three seasons, he made 42 league appearances for the club, scoring nine goals.
In 1958, he joined York City, where he made 53 appearances and scored eight goals before retiring from full-time football in 1961.
After leaving Bootham Crescent, Twissell worked in insurance and continued playing locally, including for Leeds-based non-league club Guiseley. By 1969, he was helping to train a local side, Norton. He fully retired from football in 1992, by which time he was living in Haxby, near York, where he spent his later years.
Twissell passed away in York in January 2023, aged 90.
