Greens on Screen started its life in 1999 before many of the football sites that we are familiar with today, including Plymouth Argyle's own official site. Greens on Screen is dedicated to the sights, sounds and history of Plymouth Argyle Football club. It is owned and run by the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive, a charity dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and display of the heritage of our great football club.

The site owes its existence to Steve Dean. Without Steve's dedication and commitment for over 25 years, GoS would not exist and be the valued and loved resource for all football fans that it is today. The site is truly the envy of many clubs, and we owe a huge debt to Steve for his tireless work, and continued support behind the scenes.

Greens on Screen's first page was published in January 1999. Its early purpose was to bring Plymouth Argyle a little closer to those unable to see their team, and whilst it has changed a great deal over the years, its core themes - sights and sounds for Westcountry exiles - still stand. The site was very lucky to take on the content of Trevor Scallan's Semper Viridis in the summer of 2007, and in 2009 launched GoS-DB, a wealth of facts and figures from PAFC's history. A year later, we embarked on a complete history of Argyle, with much-valued contributions from chapter authors. Greens on Screen was taken over by its new custodians, The Argyle Archive, in 2024.

Greens on Screen is an amateur website and proud of it. It is run by a team of volunteers from the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive (Argyle Archive). Without the hard work and much-valued contributions of these volunteers, running the site would not be possible. Greens on Screen is self-taught and as a result, a little bit quirky.

Greens on Screen remains advertisement free, which means we are grateful for the generous support of our donors and the work of our volunteers to help keep it free of promotions. PERCY SAUL

Born in Masbrough, a suburb of Rotherham in present-day South Yorkshire, he began his career with local side Thornhill United, who later became Rotherham County, and were a forerunner of Rotherham United.

In 1901 he joined Gainsborough Trinity, then, briefly, a Football League club, and over the next three years played 68 times, scoring eight goals. He also won a Lincolnshire Cup winners' medal with the club in the 1903-04 season.

In May 1904 he moved to Home Park as a Frank Brettell signing as Argyle entered the Southern League and was virtually ever-present over the next two seasons. Described as a versatile yet dependable player, he could play at either full-back or half-back and the 1905-06 Argyle handbook described him as: "The apostle of backs and half-backs, but a better back than half. He does not believe in doing things by half, neither did the management when they played Percy at back. Must continue to improve, no retrograde movement here. Please note!"

Such was Saul's impressive form that he was much in demand, and was reluctantly sold to Liverpool in April 1906. Over the next three seasons at Anfield he played 83 times, scoring twice, and also won the Liverpool Cup in 1906-07.

With his contract expiring in July 1909, he left Anfield to join Coventry City. He made 30 appearances in the Southern League during the 1909-10 season before adding a further 29 games the following year.

He then returned home in August 1911, signing for Rotherham Town before re-joining his renamed first club, Rotherham County, in 1912. The two clubs would merge in 1925 to form the present-day Rotherham United.

Little is known about Saul's post-football life, but he remained in Yorkshire, passing away in Bradfield, between Sheffield and Barnsley, in January 1965 at the age of 83. At the time, Bradfield formed part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.
