ALF ROWE
Full Name: Alfred James Rowe
Born: 05 September 1895
Came from: Barking Town Went to: Queens Park Rangers
First game: 17 December 1921 Last game: 10 January 1925
Appearances: 42 (42/0) Goals: 0
Born in Poplar, in East London, and a half-back, he joined Argyle under Bob Jack, for the club's second campaign in the Football League. He was signed as part of a trio of players from London League side Barking Town in the summer of 1921, Jack Leslie and Frank Richardson being the others.
Chances were limited in his first season, but over his four season spell at Home Park he chalked up 42 matches without ever becoming an established regular. The run he had in the side in 1924-25 season, was his best period in green.
He did however score a noteworthy goal for the club, though one not recorded as part of his official statistics. He scored the only goal of the game as Argyle beat Argentina 1-0 in July 1924, at Boca Juniors' 'La Bombonera' stadium during the club's tour of South America. It was the club's second victory over Argentina in three encounters on a tour which also saw the club defeat Uruguay, a nation that would win the World Cup just months later.
In search of more regular first-team football and a return to the south east, he moved to Third Division (South) side Queens Park Rangers in August 1925. He also left Devon with a plus one, after marrying a Lydia Rosina Coe in 1922, whilst at Home Park.
He found similar challenges at Loftus Road, though he did manage a similar number of appearances for Rangers as he did Argyle. In total he made 49 appearances and scored twice (including on debut) in the 1925-26 season. After Rangers, no further clubs are recorded, though, being into his 30s by then, its possible he called time on his career.
Little is know about his later life but he passed away, back in his native Barking, in 1967 at the age of 72 years old.
