ARTHUR MORGAN
Full Name: Arthur Robert Morgan
Born: 13 September 1930
Came from: Swansea Town Went to: Barry Town
First game: 10 April 1954 Last game: 03 November 1956
Appearances: 37 (37/0) Goals: 4
Born in Ogmore Valley, within the borough of Bridgend in south Wales, Morgan began his professional career with Swansea Town - the team that would later become Swansea City in 1970. He turned professional in 1950, having previously played for the British Army side during his National Service.
He went on to spend nearly five years at Vetch Field, but rarely featured in the first team, making just 12 appearances in total. He was brought to Argyle in November 1953 as a potential replacement for long-serving left-back Pat Jones under Jimmy Rae.
He made 37 appearances across four seasons in Devon, though, like his time at Swansea, he was unable to force his way into regular selection, with Jones showing no intent of being replaced just yet. Despite later being regarded as a defensive player and, historically, as a tough-tackling defender, Morgan was also recorded as a second-string or reserve striker and scored all four of his career goals for Argyle. They all came in the 1955-56 season, including one in a February 1956 4-0 home win over Liverpool in Division Two.
He started three games in the 1956-57 season, which were to be his final appearances for the club, before returning home with a move to Southern League Barry Town in August 1959. He played for the club for almost five years before retiring in May 1964.
He remained living and working locally in Barry until his tragic death in a gas explosion at his home in October 2000, aged 70.
