TOM MCARTHUR
Note: Books suggest he played two games for Argyle, but this is wrong; he made just the one appearance. The common mistake is because of an incorrect line-up often quoted for the game on 27 Feb 1954, as proven by reference to local newspaper archives.
Born: 23 April 1925
Came from: Leicester City Went to: Brush Sports, Loughborough
First game: 06 March 1954 Last game: 06 March 1954
Appearances: 1 (1/0) Goals: 0
Born in Neilston, East Renfrewshire, he started playing football for his home town side, Neilston Victoria, a juvenile club that ground-shared Broadlie Park with the village's senior side at the time, Neilston FC.
A former Scots Guardsman, he was spotted playing at centre-half locally and secured a move to English Second Division side Leicester City in 1947. He spent eight seasons with the club, falling just one appearance short of a century, with 99 appearances in total.
In early 1954, he moved to Argyle as a Jimmy Rae signing, earmarked as a potential successor to Jack Chisholm.
However, he played only once for the club, in a 2-2 home draw against Hull City in March 1954.
He left a year later to return to the Leicestershire area, joining Brush Sports, a Loughborough-based side that effectively served as the sports club for Brush Electrical Engineering Works and played in the Birmingham and District League. His spell there may have been relatively brief, as the club dissolved in 1960.
In later life, he returned to his native Scotland and died in late April 1994, with his death registered in Cowdenbeath. He was aged 69.
