Hamilton was born in Baillieston, east of Glasgow and started his career as an apprentice with Sunderland before signing professional terms. The midfielder made his debut for the Roker Park club in 1971 and went on to play 16 times in a three year spell. Moving to Home Park in November 1975, his stay was brief, making only a half a dozen starts before moving to Bristol Rovers where he played 20 times. It wasn't until he moved to Carlisle United at the start of the 1977-78 season that he truly established himself, making over 150 appearances in a four-year spell. He then spent a short time with Gretna in 1982-83, when the Scottish club played in the English non-leagues, before having a brief two-game renaissance in the League with Hartlepool United. He returned to Gretna for two further spells, with another brief renaissance with Queen of the South sandwiched in between. He also mustered a brief 15-game spell with Sydney-based APIA-Leichhardt in the Australian National Soccer League (NSL) before returning for his third and final spell with Gretna.
