Born in Plymouth, Gill was a product of Argyle’s youth system.
He attended school in Liskeard, represented both East Cornwall and Plymouth Schoolboys, and was on the books of Liskeard Athletic while still at school.
Having first joined Argyle in June 1997, Gill was a young attacking midfielder who was just 18 when he made his debut in a Football League Trophy tie away to Brentford at Griffin Park in December 1998. Managed by Kevin Hodges, Argyle lost 2-0, with Gill and Lee Power coming on late in the game to replace Ronnie Mauge and Earl Jean. The match is remembered for two other reasons. Despite it being a Tuesday night, Argyle’s traditionally strong following in the capital meant that away supporters accounted for more than half of the 1,580 crowd. It also marked Steve Adams’ Argyle debut, after he came on as a substitute for Mick Heathcote.
In May 1999, at the end of the season, Gill was not offered a contract by Hodges and was released by the club. He returned to his childhood club, Liskeard Athletic, two days later. At Lux Park, he won the South West Counties Youth League title in 1999 and received a call-up to the Cornwall County squad the same year.
He spent several seasons with Liskeard into the new millennium before later playing for Millbrook, his last recorded club.
