Purse began his career with Leyton Orient after turning down YTS offers from both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. He made his professional debut for the O's just days after his 17th birthday and quickly established himself in the first team. Over the next two seasons, he made more than 60 appearances for the club and also enjoyed a brief loan spell with Finnish side BF-IFK before joining Oxford United in July 1996.

After just 18 months at the Manor Ground, Purse moved to Birmingham City for £700,000. He went on to make more than 200 appearances during six successful seasons at St Andrew's, winning two England under-21 caps in 1998, helping Birmingham earn promotion to the Premier League in 2002 and reaching the League Cup Final the previous year.

In June 2004, he joined West Bromwich Albion for £750,000, spending a single season with the Baggies before moving to Cardiff City a year later for the same fee.

Purse quickly became a mainstay of Cardiff's defence and was appointed club captain. After signing a contract extension in 2007, however, he suffered a serious knee injury and a subsequent infection that cost him his place in the side. Although he regained his starting position for a three-month spell during the 2008-09 campaign, a dispute with manager Dave Jones saw him fall out of favour once more and he was released at the end of his contract.

Sheffield Wednesday secured his signature in July 2009 and he was again appointed captain, making 70 appearances over the following 18 months before leaving by mutual consent. He then joined his boyhood club Millwall on a short-term contract that was later extended for a further year.

Purse looked set to join Argyle on loan in September 2011, but the Football League blocked the move because of the club's ongoing administration. Instead, he joined Yeovil Town on a temporary basis before finally arriving at Home Park on loan in November 2011. The move was made permanent when the January transfer window opened, with Purse signing a six-month contract that included the option of a further 12 months.

He immediately formed a strong central defensive partnership with Maxime Blanchard and missed just three matches through suspension during the remainder of the campaign. Carl Fletcher appointed him club captain ahead of the 2012-13 season, but in December 2012 he was transfer-listed "with some reluctance" in an attempt to free up funds for new signings. His contract was subsequently terminated by mutual consent and he joined Port Vale, where, in an unusual twist, he was unveiled on the pitch immediately before Argyle's League Two fixture at Vale Park. He made 17 appearances and scored twice as Vale secured promotion to League One, although manager Micky Adams later admitted the decision not to offer him a new contract was based on his age rather than his performances.

After a trial with Northampton Town in July 2013, Purse moved to Finnish Veikkausliiga side IFK Mariehamn the following month, signing until the end of the 2013 season. He made six appearances before returning to England to join Southern League Premier Division club Chesham United in January 2014, helping the Generals reach the play-off final, where they were beaten 3-1 by St Albans City.

In January 2015, Purse joined Conference Premier side Welling United alongside former Argyle team-mate Karl Duguid. Less than two months later, he answered a call from former colleague Nicky Forster to join Staines Town. Although unable to prevent the club's relegation, he was retained for the following season.

He wound down his playing career with spells at AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Hayes & Yeading United, Chesham United for a second time, Bishop's Stortford and AFC Rushden & Diamonds again before finishing his career with Enfield Town during the 2017-18 campaign.

Alongside his playing career, Purse helped establish the Malcolm Arnold Academy in Northampton in July 2014, becoming its Director of Football. He moved into coaching with Oxford United's under-16s in April 2018 before returning to former club Cardiff City in December 2021 as manager of the under-23 side.

After five years in South Wales, Purse took his first senior managerial role in July 2026 when he was appointed manager of League of Ireland Premier Division club Sligo Rovers.
