A 6ft 3in central defender born in Slough, Alex Mitchell began playing for New Windsor Kestrels at the age of seven. Following trials with Brentford, Reading, Wycombe Wanderers and Aldershot Town, he joined Millwall in 2018.

Having yet to make his senior debut for the Lions, Mitchell spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan with National League side Bromley, making ten appearances. Encouraged by his progress, Millwall rewarded him with a new long-term contract in August 2021 before he made his senior debut later that month in a League Cup tie against Cambridge United.

At the end of August, he joined League Two side Leyton Orient on a season-long loan, making 30 league appearances during the 2021-22 campaign.

Another loan followed in July 2022 when he joined Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone. He made 29 appearances, scored his first senior goal in a 2-1 home defeat to Celtic and was named the Saints' Young Player of the Year at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Mitchell's development continued with another season-long loan in August 2023, this time at League One side Lincoln City, where he made 41 appearances and scored once.

Having returned to Millwall, he joined fellow League One club Charlton Athletic on a three-year contract in June 2024 for an undisclosed fee, having made just one senior appearance for the Lions. He featured 35 times and scored twice as Charlton won promotion through the League One play-offs, ironically passing Argyle on the way down. He scored in the final league match of the season against Burton Albion but was an unused substitute in the Play-off Final victory over Leyton Orient at Wembley.

Following Argyle's relegation from the Championship and the extensive rebuilding of the squad, Mitchell became the club's 11th signing of the summer and its first loan arrival when he joined on a season-long deal in August 2025. Having made just a single appearance for Charlton following promotion, in a League Cup tie against Stevenage, he made his Argyle debut against former club Leyton Orient less than 24 hours after signing, although the Pilgrims slipped to a fourth successive league defeat at the start of the campaign.

Mitchell proved an outstanding success at Home Park, becoming a firm fans' favourite through a combination of consistently impressive performances, a series of humorous viral post-match interviews and his close friendship with Ronan Curtis. He was named Argyle's Player of the Month in December 2025 and again in March 2026 as the club's remarkable resurgence lifted them from relegation trouble to the brink of the play-off places. Only eventual champions Lincoln City collected more points over the same period. Although Argyle ultimately fell just short, Mitchell's contribution was recognised when he was voted the Supporters' Player of the Season for 2025-26.

At the end of the campaign, he returned to Charlton Athletic with a year remaining on his contract.

His popularity inevitably prompted speculation that he could return permanently, fuelled by reports that he had a Plymouth-based girlfriend and had remained in the area during the summer.

Those rumours proved well founded. Just days after the disappointment of Laurent Tolaj's departure to Bristol City in July 2026, Argyle lifted supporters' spirits by announcing Mitchell's return on a permanent transfer from Charlton. He signed a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
