At 22 years of age, Wright joined Argyle in early January 2023, signing from Blackpool for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Born in Huyton, Wright spent time in the youth systems at Tranmere Rovers, Everton and Blackburn Rovers before joining Leicester City shortly before his 18th birthday. He made his first appearance for the Foxes' under-21 side in the Football League Trophy at Rochdale in 2018 and continued his development in the competition the following season, making five appearances before Leicester were eliminated by Newport County.

During the 2020-21 season, Wright scored his first goals for Leicester's under-21s, again in the Football League Trophy, before joining Cheltenham Town on loan for the second half of the campaign. He scored four goals in 17 appearances as Michael Duff's side secured the League Two title. Wright returned to Cheltenham the following season and enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in 37 appearances.

His performances attracted interest from several clubs, including Argyle, while Leicester rewarded his progress with a new contract and included him in their pre-season first-team plans. Instead, a deadline-day move to Championship side Blackpool followed, giving Wright the opportunity to test himself at a higher level. After 10 appearances for the Seasiders, he moved to Home Park, becoming Steven Schumacher's third signing of a busy January transfer window.

He immediately endeared himself to the Green Army by saying:

"It was a no-brainer, as soon as it came back about. When the window opened, I knew it could happen. I said to my agent and my family: 'I just need to get it done. I want to go there and become one of them.'"

He marked his home debut with a goal against former club Cheltenham Town in a 4-2 victory in January 2023. Wright finished the season with 20 League One appearances and four goals, playing a pivotal role in Schumacher's title-winning side as Argyle recovered from their Football League Trophy Final defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Wembley in early April. His most memorable contribution came later that month when he scored a dramatic late winner in a 2-1 victory at Shrewsbury Town. On a remarkable evening, with both Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday applying relentless pressure in the title race, Argyle briefly slipped from first to third before Wright's goal restored them to the summit - a position they would not relinquish.

Wright started the opening Championship fixture of the following season but suffered knee ligament damage in September 2023. Surgery was avoided and he returned to action in early November. Following Steven Schumacher's departure to Stoke City in December, Ian Foster took charge and Wright fell out of favour, making just one league appearance under the new head coach before Foster's brief tenure came to an end.

The 2024-25 campaign proved an eventful one. He was sent off for what Wayne Rooney described as "a stupid tackle" during a 4-0 Boxing Day defeat to Coventry City and served a three-match suspension. Following Rooney's departure, Wright featured more regularly under Miron Muslic. In the fourth round of the FA Cup, Argyle were drawn against Liverpool, the club Wright supports. He started the famous 1-0 victory at Home Park, with chairman Simon Hallett later praising him for "playing like a man possessed". After the match, Wright swapped shirts with Luis Díaz and was interviewed live on ITV.

Following Argyle's relegation from the Championship and the appointment of Tom Cleverley, Wright joined League One side Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan. Returning to the North West appeared to suit him and he quickly became a favourite with the Latics supporters. He made 49 appearances, scored eight goals and completed a clean sweep of the club's end-of-season awards, being named Player of the Season, Players' Player of the Season and Away Player of the Season.

With his loan spell complete, Wright was released by Argyle at the expiry of his contract, allowing him to pursue opportunities elsewhere. In June 2026, he joined Scottish Premiership side Hibernian on a three-year deal.
