Bakinson was born in Camden but, having moved out of the capital, joined Luton Town as an under-10. He progressed through their youth system before signing a three-and-a-half-year professional contract with the League Two side in March 2016. However, his potential attracted the attention of Championship club Bristol City, and the 18-year-old moved to Ashton Gate on a three-year contract in August 2017, making his first-team debut in a League Cup tie two months later.
The following summer, he was loaned to Newport County in League Two, initially for six months, but the arrangement was extended for the whole of the 2018-19 campaign. It was a successful season for the 20-year-old, and his performances in 42 appearances earned him the club's Young Player of the Season award. He also appeared at Wembley for the Exiles, coming on as a substitute in normal time in the League Two Play-Off Final alongside former Pilgrim Jamille Matt, narrowly losing 1-0 after extra time, to Tranmere Rovers.
Bakinson then joined Argyle on loan in January 2020 to help Ryan Lowe's side push for promotion from League Two at the first attempt. The tall, rangy midfielder put in some commanding performances and scored his first goal for the club in February 2020 in a 1-0 home win over his former loan club Newport County, as the Law of the Returning Player so often dictates. Unfortunately, his expected four-month loan turned out to be much shorter, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the 2019-20 season to end with nine matches still to play.
Returning to Ashton Gate, he appeared regularly for Bristol City throughout the 2020-21 season and again during the first half of the following campaign, but a falling-out with his manager triggered a loan move to League One Ipswich Town until the end of the 2021-22 season, during which he played 17 times and scored twice.
Having clocked up 53 appearances and five goals for Bristol City, the 24-year-old was released on his return from Ipswich and, in July 2022, joined Sheffield Wednesday, helping them from League One to the Championship in the season in which they pursued Steven Schumacher's title-winning Pilgrims. In two seasons at Hillsborough, he played 42 times, scoring twice.
Having found Championship starts harder to come by, he was loaned to Charlton Athletic in January 2024 for the rest of the season, playing 15 times and scoring once at The Valley.
In May 2024, Bakinson was released at the end of his Sheffield Wednesday contract having made 34 appearances and scoring once, and, that July, signed for Wycombe Wanderers in League One. After making 34 appearances for the Chairboys, he signed for fellow League One side Leyton Orient in July 2025 on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
Having made 43 appearances and scored twice during Orient's 2025-26 season, he was unable to make the starting line-up for the new campaign. In late August 2026, with Argyle having sold Brendan Wiredu to Salford City and Malachi Boateng having been injured in the first away match of the season, Bakinson re-joined Argyle for a second spell, under Tom Cleverley. He arrived on a season-long loan on the same day the club signed Spurs youngster Oliver Irow.
