A bustling centre-forward who could also play at inside-left, Toms was signed from Manchester United in time for the first season of League football, but he did not feature in the opening game against Norwich. He did however play 24 times in that first campaign, which proved to be his only season at Home Park. Having spent his early career with Eccles Borough and Southport Central, he then made just over a dozen appearances for the Red Devils before moving to the South West. After playing his part in Argyle's inaugural League season, he then played for Tranmere Rovers, Oldham Athletic, Coventry City, Stockport County, Wrexham and Crewe Alexandra before winding down his career with Great Harewood.
